Re: Mutant Spanish [Efa"JO]
Get out of my mind kodé! I was a few hours ago explaining to a friend how Celtic mutations work, because she asked me why there are so many h's in Irish, and I just got carried away. So I came up with this (and these are the actual words and pronunciations I used for the explanation). perro [ˈpero],...

Re: The Great Proto-Indo-European Thread
Is there any reason why *e *o couldn't have been [æ ɔ] or so? That would resolve the problem of there being no /a/ (Seri has /æ ɑ i o/) and answer the question of why so many IE langs have low vowel mergers of some sort. Actually I’ve considered this for a while. It seems that the vowel system in l...

Add stress on the syllable two morae before the last consonant, or on the first syllable if there isn't one. Delete /i u/ adjacent to the stressed syllable, unless it is in the first or last syllable of the word. Reduce unstressed /a e o/ to [ə] (unless nasal) and /aj aw/ to /i u/ adjacent to the st...

/pʰ' tʰ' cʰ' kʰ' qʰ'/ Those are impossible. Also, you’re not understanding secondary articulations. They usually pattern as places of articulation, not as manners, that is, you’re far more likely to have /p t tˤ c k kʷ q qʷ p’ t’ tˤ’ c’ k’ kʷ’ q’ qʷ’ b d dˤ ɟ g gʷ/. I'd suggest <sh zh ch j> versus <sch zch tch dj>. English speakers are familiar with most of these, except for <zch> and maybe <zh>, but they’d probably figure out the relationship between /S s\/ and /Z z\/ more easily than with <zj>.

But there can surely be no reasonable doubt that the vowels are different in 'Lennin' and 'Lennon', 'purest' and 'purist', or 'illusion' or 'allusion'! I distinguish the first and third (assuming Lennin , with which I am unfamiliar, is said the same as Lenin ), but not the second. I have lower midd...

Do you, for example, have an alternate Spanish that sounds just like Spanish, but isn't Spanish? (I've always loved that Idea. :D) I’ve had a similar i...

Similar question with no answers. How would Mthaduri borrow something like [aja]? I don't want it to be a'i'a with three consecutive glottal stops, and asha seems too distant. I’m borrowing foreign [w] as /b/, and [j] usually as a glottal stop when adjacent to something that would be borrowed as /i/...
