Given that /ʌ/ :> /ɑ/ /ɔ/ :> /ɒ/ /ɛ/ :> /æ/ what is the likelihood of a general change /a/ :> /ə/? Would this also happen in accented (pitch, that is) and long positions or is it more likely to have something like /aː a˥ aː˥/ :> /ɐː ɐ˥ ɐː˥/? I think you’re crowding the bottom edge of the vowel spac...

Re: Names in Culture
Most of my modern cultures use the Satheiran system (given name, patronymic, family name), but the Arıvadha had an interesting method of naming. Most people have five names, although the aristocracy may take multiple given names, apart from their titles. First is the family name, which is passed dow...

How would Mthaduri borrow something like [aja]? I don't want it to be a'i'a with three consecutive glottal stops, and asha seems too distant.

Re: Help me with semantic examples! (from Zomp's blog)
Ahora in (Salvadoran) Spanish, which etymologically comes from häc hörä 'at this hour', means both 'today' and 'now' (in the sense that something has changed in relation to the past). Ahora lo vamos a hacer 'we'll do it today' ~ 'now we're gonna do it (we hadn't done it before on purpose or because...

What about a reverse of the unpacking change e.g. [tn] -> [n̥]. I'm thinking of having the two sounds in free variation. I'd expect a /hn/ intermediate to be probable for both sn → n̥ and tn → n̥, but if you're having n̥ → tn anyway, leaving them in free variation is not a problem. There are two ma...
