Re: Sound Change Quickie Thread

So with regards to my previously-mentioned phonemic inventory collapse idea, what do you say about this: 1)b d dʒ g → m n ɲ ŋ/_Ṽ 1.5)g → ɣ 2)w r j ɣ → m n ɲ ŋ/_Ṽ 3)b d dʒ → w r j/!_Ṽ m n ɲ ŋ → w r j ɣ/!_Ṽ Does this sound plausible to you? Wouldn"t it create too many morphemes of one series? Also, I'...

Re: Romanization challenge thread

Thanks! The voicing distinction in the Safidi dialect comes straight from Classical and Egyptian Arabic loanwords, which comprise about half of the lexicon, as opposed to about a third in the standard language, and are almost never assimilated. So after the standard language went through the Great M...

Re: Sound Change Quickie Thread

I'd like to ask this: what is the quickest way to collapse a SAE phoneme inventory inventory (so 5-7 vowels, nasals, liquids, voiced vs. voiceless fricatives and voiced vs. voiceless plosives) into something with as few distinct consonant series as possible (so something like Greenlandic, with nasal...

Re: Romanization challenge thread

Plusquamperfect - That looks overloaded with features to the point where any orthography that's not massively defective or a con-script purpose-designed specifically for this lantuage isn't going to cut it. And as an aside, it does look kitchen-sinky to the point that many, myself included, would sa...

Right, my bad with the improper use of brackets. As for the natlangs, I know that they are common in this thread - I think my own native language was romanised here on three different occasions.

Mèþru: there aren't any macrons. There're only tildas and tone letters.

Re: Ilosean Shayana, AKA this is your English on space drugs

Seeing how Shayana borrowed heavily from other languages (via assimilation of other peoples into the Liin society), I'd say that we need not bother with any etymology at all - we just say that it's a loanword. As for the phonetics, it's probably going to be pronounced as [mʲɛɐdɾ] (standard dialect),...

Re: Romanization challenge thread

This says something about Phoenician and Ilosean Shayana, doesn't it? I can't tell what, though.
It says "Phoenician Shayana isn't a dialect of Ilosean Shayana, but instead is a distinct language" with a very alpha-version grammar.

Mèþru, I doubt that the allophony shift can make sense if it occurs before the vowel deletion - I can see the yod-insertion arising spontaneously, but nothing else.

That looks great, mèþru! Although I'd like to ask you why you chose to retain the glottal stop instead of the affricate in the [ˈoˤ.qe.t͡sʰːekt] to [ˈo˧˩ʔeə̯̆k˧] transition and why you chose to delete the /s/ in [nexeset] and turn it into [ˈn̟ʲeə̯̆˧xeə̯̆t˧] instead of [ˈn̟ʲeə̯̆˧xsxeə̯̆t˧]. Anyway, r...
