I doubt /raʊt/ exists in America either, I think those who have said that they say /raʊt/ mean /ɹaʊt/.

Re: Incorrect pronunciations you have (or have had) to unlea

Also, I normally pronounce "route" as /ru(ː)t/ (there are many who say /raʊ̯t/), but several years ago I was informed that I should pronounce "router" as /ˈraʊ̯tər/ if I wanted to be taken seriously. Though I now find that both dictionary.com and wiktionary.com list /ˈru(ː)tər/ as well ... Brits ne...

How quickly can you sketch out a grammar?

I feel as if I've been working on Quebric for a rather long time, and I'm kinda thinking that some of it may be over-complicated, maybe it isn't... I dunno. Now I have revisited some things more than once to revise them or completely redo them, so that's taken some time, but I feel like it's never e...

Indeed. This is a great thread. I've been coming here to listen to them over the last few days. Hopefully I'll be able to share something soon.

Re: Favorite/least favorite features from natlangs

I really don't like the northern-dialect's vowel /ɨ̞/, which is just an absolutely f-ing ugly sound. I much prefer the southern /i/. I don't necessarily like the sound of /ɨ/, but I think it's cool that Welsh has it. (My own speech lacks it, since I learned to speak Hwntw) I'm a hwntw learning gog ...

Since my Welsh classes have started back up I've remembered something else I dislike about it:

Just stumbled upon this clip of Tolkien reading "One Ring to rule them all..." and I noticed his pronunciation of Mordor.

Re: Questions about Welsh

Can anyone explain the difference between the prefixes 'cyd-' and 'cyf-'? They appear to mean the same thing - the coming together of two things, but I think they're used differently somehow.

Re: Favorite/least favorite features from natlangs

So reading and saying dd, ff, ll etc isn't really a problem. Another note is that the Welsh people's attitudes to Welsh, particularly Welsh speakers, is that we're very protective of the language, and so I very much doubt people will be pronouncing ll as anything other than /ɬ/, unless they physica...

Re: Favorite/least favorite features from natlangs

I've heard from e.g. here that Welsh <ll> is actually pronounced [ç] by many Welsh speakers, while still being distinguished from /x/. Diddorol iawn! I learned Welsh pronunciation from a native German-speaker and I never recall hearing [ç] for /ɬ/. I wonder if it could be regional? But I've listene...

Re: Incorrect pronunciations you have (or have had) to unlea

OT: Ether . I'm not sure where I picked up the pronunciation with stressed /ɛ/ unless it was by backformation from ethereal . I too pronounce it /ˈɛðɹ̩/--I guess it's supposed to be /ˈiθɹ̩/? But I pronounce ethereal /əˈθiɹˤiəl/. I've never pronounced the word with /ð/. That's just plain bonkers. I ...

Re: Cellar door

I haven't read “LotR”. I have watched the movies and they didn't amaze me. I have tried watching the whole “Star Wars” trilogy and it didn't entertain me either. I got bored and moved to more interesting things. “Lord of the Ring” and “Star Wars” may have been “the thing”, the breakthroughs, the re...

Re: Cellar door

Aragorn is supposed to be beardless because of his Elven lineage, too. Are you sure about that? I'm positive the text references his grey beard at least once. Hobbits are said to be beardless except for the Stoors, but the only Man I recall being explicitly referenced as being beardless is Prince I...

Re: Cellar door

While we're complaining about the Peter Jackson films, did Tolkien ever describe Elves or Hobbits as having pointy ears? There's evidence they do. My complaint against Jackson's portrayal of elves is that Tolkien certainly didn't describe them being so...androgynous. Cirdan is supposed to have a be...

Welsh: I don't really like the inflected prepositions - it's just a pain in the arse for a learner. I love the inflected prepositions. In the lead-up to the new season of American Horror Story I have been pronouncing the season's sub-title, Roanoke, as /ˈroʊ.ənoʊki/ and I just found out that it's actually /ˈroʊ.ənoʊk/. In my defence, I know next to nothing about Native American cultures or languages.

Re: Cellar door

Now there's a can of worms on par with "do Balrogs have wings". Here's an overview of both sides of the argument. In short, it's highly ambiguous. There's evidence elves had pointy ears, and there's evidence they didn't. (hobbits are, however, explicitly said to have slightly pointed ears) Going by...

Currently, the longest Quebric word is andebrydhiair rebel (noun). The lexicon only has 337 words so far so there's plenty of scope for a longer word in the future.

Re: Cellar door

As much as I love the LOTR films, they cast Aragorn all wrong... twice. Viggo Mortensen was much too young to play Aragorn and his character was all wrong - he was nowhere near "grim" enough.

Maybe he was familiar with it then. I've definitely seen somewhere where he wrote something like "French u for Sindarin y" but for the life of me I cannot remember where. There are so many books!
