Re: The Great Proto-Indo-European Thread

Why people always insist on aligning the arbitrary numbering of the laryngeals to the front-back dimension of PoA is utterly beyond me Due to the colouring. (h1 = e, h2 = a, h3 = o). Agreed, there are other solutions to that (i.a. h1 being actually non-colouring), but it's tempting. It's like the o...

A Turkish family finds out that the Voynich manuscript is in some kind of Old Turkish. And all the known back story is wrong, it was actually stolen from Ottoman archives. Looks totally legit.

I also was awarded, for that talk, the German Liquid Crystal Society's "Young Scientist Award" for the best presentation by a Ph.D. student at the conference. I now listened to all your Bach examples. Reinforced my love for that man's music. I remember fusion cooking being the hot trend here in Germany about 10 years ago. There still are fusion restaurants or places that call themselves that way, but my impression is that the hype has passed.

Common misconception. It's true that our colonisation attempts (from the early 18th century onward) were small-scale and unsuccesful - we certainly never attempted a colonisation on the scale you tried! India was "small scale"? I think Sal is referring specifically to colonisation attempts in Vietn...

It cannot be excluded that Proto-Uralic borrowed the 'name' word from an IE dialect (or a lost sister language of PIE) with a similar form, even though 'name' is a basic vocabulary item (Décsy's claim that the early Uralians did not use names and acquired naming only when they met Indo-Europeans is...

In Germany, you'll find Vietnamese restaurants in every city and biggish town. Vietnamese in Germany are mostly South Vietnamese refugees who arrived in the West in the 70s or Northern Vietnamese guest workers in East Germany who stayed on after reunification.
