Pretty banknote. The only thing that grates is the blue writing at the bottom on the front side. It doesn't contrast well with the background.

The only words I can't make out are "iavezen" (iavezen certainly corresponds to wes-, one of the stems in sein 'be') and "maashmo" (maashmo ~ manchmal). Other than that it's all German/W-Germanic words indeed.

Re: German Irregular Verbs by Vowel Change

Just to clarify Drydic's objection to a supposed overuse of slashes for the casual passer-by: Of course, since there are no MHG speakers anymore and we only have written sources with wild orthographic differences (which nonetheless show some regional consistency and allow to make educated guesses al...

Re: German Irregular Verbs by Vowel Change

OK, since the different e-sounds seem somewhat complicated in MHG, here's a summary of what Paul et al.'s Mittelhochdeutsche Grammatik (25th ed. 2007) says on a normalized version of MHG phonology (of course, individual dialects may differ and as usual, historical sources confront us with a great va...

Re: German Irregular Verbs by Vowel Change

As far as I can remember from an introductory class on German linguistics I took a couple of years ago, there are regions where a difference between /eː/ and /ɛː/ is only made for minimal pairs, but /eː/ is preferred otherwise. (I think I may actually do that?) I'm not sure if there's a Wenker map f...

Re: An Attempt to Fix English Spelling (AKA Mission: Impossi

Thanks, finally someone who explains to me how sound change works :) Let's stop this mess of changing pronunciation then, before laziness makes us degenerate fully into just grunting like animals. Instead, let's keep pronouncing things properly, i.e. the way they're spelled.

Generalizing about "sighted" people is just as stupid as generalizing about the blind. Stupider, even, given that we make up a much larger sector of the population and have correspondingly more diversity. Not all "sighted" people's brains function the same way and thinking they do is racist Says th...
