I've never actually used a compound bow, but I assume that they can be considered an improvement of the regular bow, and therefore something that would have been a very useful invention in the absence of gunpowder. Even in the presence of gunpowder, it's arguably a disincentive for the development ...

Why would a contraction sound more old-fashioned than having the words separated, clearly articulated and less "unclear" and "slangish" as a contraction might tend to be? Hypercorrection could be the culprit, but I'd be more willing to bet that it's a stylistic change from imitating British speech ...

Too horrifying for my taste. Also I prefer it when the people overcame their prejudices and helped the "badly dressed" woman.
I admit laughing at this.

Everyone can agree that there's a phoneme /i/ in English, and use that for phonemic transcription when they don't need to be more specific. But you can say your /i/ is [i1_+_>] and I can say mine is [i_-] and Torco can say his is [i] and bricka can say his is [I_+], if we need to and none of that co...

So, Sal, to bring it back to the original question, the first requirement on your list makes it impossible (or at least very, very difficult) for an equatorial continent to have a Monsoon, right? If the ICTZ is crossing the continent at the equinoxes (roughly, in theory) as well as caught on either ...

The moving ICTZ causes the specific latitudes and absolute sizes of the cells to expand and contract, but not these proportions. The presence or absence of land also does not significantly affect these boundaries [confirmation needed]. I remember reading something once (can I find it now? Of course...

Another natural example: aspirate voiceless plosives ([t_h] for instance). To the average English-speaker the bold parts of t op and pre tt y are analyzed as being the same (ie, we can't recognize the difference between [t_h] and [t]). To a Hindi-speaker, however, they're clearly separate phonemes /...

I'm not from "extremely" Northern California, but still a more inland NorCal area, and I have an accent that's appreciably different from what's been described here as Cascadian - I have the cot-caught, pen-pin, lenin-lennon and merry-mary-marry mergers, noticeable /u aU/ fronting (to [y]/[}] and [{...
