Re: Happy Things Thread
i'm truly sorry for americans who will have to suffer some of the bad consequences of the guy, but for the rest of the world it's looking good. Keep telling yourself that. I mean, don't get me wrong, i'm totally horrified by trump's rhetoric <sniff sniff> but who knows what he's actually gonna do. ...

it was six hours of hard work, i'll tell you that oh, man, rope bed, why did i never think of that! man, indians be clever yo. maybe the next bed i build will have a rope frame instead of them horizontal stick thingies. i wouldn't sleep on a mattressless bed but rope instead of wood would indeed yie...

Re: Native American survival scenario
Torco/Zaarin: I wonder what would have happened in north america without Napoleon. Say: Wolfe never conquered Quebec; as a result, the French do well enough in the war that they aren't bankrupt, so that Louis isn't forced to call a parliament, or at any rate is able to stay on top of it, so there's...

Re: Native American survival scenario
Maybe I'm too late to the party, but I just wanted to say the only thing I can see at such a late date that might make the native americans able to withstand the might of early us imperialism would be a strong european ally investing heavily in them as a march. a stronger mexico could do the trick, ...

Re: Life on a gas giant, the conworld
You're not wrong, I head they call neptune and uranus "ice giants", reserving gas giants for jupiter and saturn. so I suppose "water giant" is as good a term as any.

Re: Life on a gas giant, the conworld
Why not? carbon dioxide, water, nitrogen, these are relatively common things in our universe, about gas giants we mostly know what's on the outside of them, and besides uranus and neptunes are pretty rich in methane and ammonia and water and all kinds of fun stuff. Take a neptune and put it closer t...

Re: Life on a gas giant, the conworld
XD man, for one's sole post to be the necroing of a four year old conworld. I'm kinda flattered I've been thinking about doing some more amphitrite, but the same reason the conworld idea is attractive is the reason why it's kind of hard to develop: it's entirely unprecedented, so there's almost no a...

Re: Discrimination (from garden path thread)
OK, fine, now I know that when you say "violence" you mean nothing at all. that's absurd. See a thing is violent or not, zompist, regardless of whether it is justified or not and viceversa: I get it that "justified" sounds nice and "violence" sound naughty and thus it might appear to someone that t...

I.e. it's not colonialism if I agree with it. yup no one is speaking about empathy: you don't need empathy to figure out that your enemies are people who sincerely believe what they do, you don't need empathy to figure out you need to tread carefully when you're fighting nonviolent injustices with ...

I thought you were a sociologist. Don't you think it's important who holds the social power in a situation? <sighs> if I had a burger for everytime someone has said "you're a sociologist, how is it possible that you disagree with my random-guy-on-the-street views about how society works" I'd be abo...

Re: Confusing headlines and other trips down the garden path
And really, don't complain about the use of the word "oppression" and then fill your post with rhetorical invocations of "force" and "violence". If you want to talk about actual violence, it's all on the other side: it's the bigots who kill gays and lesbians and trans people, not the other way arou...

Re: Confusing headlines and other trips down the garden path
Sal, no one ever complains that they can't kick people out of their place of business because they are black, or women. Why is this different? they do, for a decade or two, and then they get used to it as increasingly the fewer and fewer folks who do get looked at with more and more suspicion. This...

EDIT: good to see you again, btw. Was wondering where you'd gotten to. hey, nice to see you too man. because then there would be no difference between a conworld and an account of a conworld that's kind of the point, isn't it? Re: Conlangs and copyright
Even though I dislike copyright in general, I gotta say there are some arguments for conlangs themselves to be copyrightable works, or at least IP: natural languages aren't, of course, but there's a difference between natural things and artificial things vis a vis their ownership which is well estab...

Re: Pantheistic reincarnation via timey wimey ball
I came up with that idea after reading about the One-Electron Universe theory. The application of the same to the soul seemed obvious. However, to develop the religious equivalent idea, a conpeoples would need to be aware of quantum phenomenon, and by the time a species developed that far, the crea...

So a statement like, "I'm gonna make you my bitch" would be baffling if addressed to a male IYD? aren't those two distinct lexemes? make someone one's bitch vs. someone being a bitch have quite different meanings: aggressive, inconsiderate and unduly confrontational, annoying and/or generally disag...
