Re: What are you playing?
I've been playing Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for the 3DS. I'm doing a Master Quest playthrough this time. I just finished Jabu-Jabu's belly and am a little weirded out that there were so many cows inside a huge whale in this version.

Re: Sound Change Quickie Thread
I don't think d > ð > ʕ is too weird. In one of my langs I have *d > ʕ: *d lenites to *ð and then merges with *ɣ, which has an allophone of [ʕ] before back vowels; vowels then move around to make /ʕ/. I kinda find it weird that *t and *θ become pharyngeal(ized), though. What are the exact details yo...

Re: The dream thread
I had a really rad dream about this superhero team. One of them had this power to summon demons through manholes. He'd throw up a manhole cover like a discus up to an open hole in the street, the cover would spin furiously around in the hole, start glowing, and a huge flaming tornado would erupt out...

I was on a precarious cliff with a friend and I had to convince him to fertilize an eagle egg while fending off a crow-girl. He couldn't manage it so I did it myself.

In Georgian there's:

გუშინ / gušin / yesterday
დღეს / dğes / today
ხვალ / xval / tomorrow
ზეგ / zeg / the day after tomorrow
მაზეგ / mazeg / the day after the day after tomorrow

Re: Unknown sound
Yeah, in languages that have things like that there's apparently disagreement about the best way to analyze them: I've seen all of [ʔʷ w' wˀ w̰]. Phonologically I'd label them what makes most sense... do they pattern with other labialized/palatized stops or ejectives or glottalized resonants? Just b...

Re: Unknown sound
No, the reason [ʔʰ] probably doesn't really exist is because the glottal stop operates differently from other stops. During the production of [t], for instance, the vocal folds are completely open, even during the period the tongue creates closure at the teeth/alveolar ridge. The VFs remain open for...

If you're looking for more technical accounts, I'd try searching things like causative-inchoative, unaccusative, valence change, complex predicate, anticausative, argument alternation. I don't know if I've seen a straightforward crosslinguistic survey of this type of stuff, but I wouldn't be surpris...

Re: Intransitives: What is the default theta role of the sub
There's no foolproof way to predict what sort of argument alternations a verb root will exhibit, at least in English and the languages I've studied. There are patterns, though. If a transitive verb is agentive and more naturally telic, it probably doesn't have an unergative counterpart (transitive w...

Re: Polysynthesis for Novices
It's significant, though, that all but one of your examples are substantivized. English is certainly very flexible with deverbal compounds, but not really so much with "NI". Consider: My cousins deer hunt all the time out in the country , He doctor recommended me a new allergy medication , Polysynth...

Yesss awesome this is great They're extremely common in North America and the Caucasus... A minor quibble: I wouldn't call any Caucasian languages polysynthetic other than the NW ones, which account for about a tenth of the total. Speaking of, I'm fairly familiar with the NWC langs, and have a good ...
