Re: Venting thread that still excludes eddy

It's a type of Indian version of Chinese food. [...] I'm given to understand it might not always be the same as the 'chinese' food of recent chinese migrants to india (just as in the UK there's a difference between the 'Indian' food that we've been adapting since the 19th century, and the various c...

Vatican doctors letter about Pope Francis I know, it's my fault, but I did at first miss the lack of apostrophe. Which made the follow up, Pope Francis: Vatican doctors letter by Pope Benedict even more puzzling. In other typo news, regarding the bridge collapse, the university was reported as havi...

Re: Venting thread that still excludes eddy

Where I live the most common moniker for these types of restaurants seems to be " Indo-Chinese ". I kind of hope it isn't the Indian version of Chinese food, which makes me think of chili chicken and gobhi Manchurian. Although I actually like gobhi Manchurian and maybe don't even mind chili chicken...

"Supporters say the protests represent a realization of power and influence by young people raised on social media who have come of age in an era of never-ending wars, highly publicized mass shootings and virulent national politics." I'm not sure what about the use of "virulent" strikes me so odd h...

Re: The Great Proto-Indo-European Thread

is there anything especially appealing about an unmotivated general ejective > implosive shift, other than that it explains the dearth of /b/? Is this shift typologically common? It happened in Yucatec Maya (/pʼ/ > /ɓ/ only), and it happened several times independently in Afroasiatic. There doesn't...

Re: Venting thread that still excludes eddy

It turns out: Britain really is the exception. There are way more Vietnamese migrants in the Czech Republic than in Britain! Poland, too. It's weird, because in general Britain has huge East Asian populations, and there are obvious migration routes from Vietnam to Britain (via Hong Kong or Malaysia...

Apparently, most of them (literally, most) work in nail salons? Seems a bit odd. Are nail salons a key point of Vietnamese culture? No, they were one of the few jobs they could find in the UK because most of them didn't have higher level qualifications. Lots of people, including on average many dif...

Re: Classical Composers

Belated International Women’s Day Special: Louise Farrenc It seemed appropriate for International Women’s Day to briefly mention one of the great female composers. Unfortunately, there aren’t any. What’s more, there aren’t even any very good female composers. It’s a struggle, frankly, to find any n...

HWH: how interesting. I think of France as having a large Vietnamese population, but I'd never before thought of Germany that way. It turns out: Britain really is the exception. Patterns of migration, I guess.

Can we please all stop with the phrase "rape baby"? Rape doesn't belong in a discussion about ancient linguistic history. It's gross. I won't stop using it because that's exactly the term that would be used if it was an actual baby. Only by a psychopath. And no, you don't need me to explain to you ...

Oh. Oh, hang on. As you may have gathered, I'm skeptical of "Indo-Uralic". My reasoning is at core: - the proposed reflexes seem easily explained through a mixture of borrowing and coincidence - genetically and archaeologically, Uralic is clearly associated with a migration from the east, making it ...

Re: Classical Composers

Great to hear that you had a good experience! Slightly jealous - I don't think I've come across an orchestral free concert here, though they must exist. Free concerts are usually for music students of varying ages to get a taste of public performance - but the standards can be really high*. Or, some...

Re: Haida and Na-Dene

It would indeed be nice if people could tone down the disgusting, rampant misogyny, which doesn't really seem relevant to the topic. On topic: no, Finnish is not a "Swedish-Russian creole". That's insane. Also: no, Uralic would not be the "oldest" branch of the Indo-Uralic family, that's not how lan...

PS: Am I the only one who feels weird pronouncing cherubim with /t͡ʃ/ rather than [kʰ]? The latter just feels more natural, probably because in Finnish the singular is kerubi , but also in all the source languages Latin, Greek and Hebrew it has a /k/. My pronunciation is really inconsistent here. I...

GIUSEPPE VERDI 1813-1901 b. (near) Parma; d. He had by then written two operas, but while the first had been a modest popular (if n...

A couple years since they finished building a new hotel across from my bus stop and a restaurant has finally moved in. A chicken fingers restaurant . My first reaction to it was, "There it is: the complete infantilisation of our cuisine is finally complete." Today is the grand opening. As of 9 a.m....

Junes: thank you! Good to hear you're feeling interested in concerts! One downside of classical concerts is that they tend to be too long - which is great for serious fans (though even serious fans tend to go through moments of boredom and distraction...), but can be off-putting for newcomers... Re: Confusing headlines and other trips down the garden path

Before I read the article, I thought a far-right MP wrote a racist letter threating some celebrity. Obviously. And I was pointing out a similar gardenpath in the body of the article. Anyway, Le Pen's been charged with what I thought at first was a hilarious gardenpath, but instead just turns out to...
