Re: The dream thread
I dreamt I was at a party at a football ground (soccer field to the North Americans) - actually on the pitch. To get in, you had to pay at a parking metre. I had no money, so I walked off. At this point, two police cars turned onto the pitch and the officers went to see if the party was lawful - com...

Re: What foreign language have you dedicated the most effort
I wasted about 4 years worth of free time trying (unsuccessfully) to learn Japanese. I have recently spent a fair bit of time on Welsh and French. I wanted to take an A-Level in French, but couldn't because I didn't have a GSCE in it. My secondary school only offered French, and the teacher was an a...

My accent is a weird mix of Welsh and West Country. This is due to living in Gloucestershire and then moving to Mid Wales. My cousins in Gloucestershire have noitced and started teasing me about my Welsh accent... :x They're in no position to poke fun with a West Country accent. :-D The West Countr...

Sentences that contain the whole alphabet
English has 'The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog' and 'Pack my box with five dozen liquor jugs'.
Does anyone have any of these for other languages (natlangs and conlangs) ?

J'ai toujours voulu aller à l'Inde. Elle doit être un lieu extraordinaire.
Actuellement, l'oreille me fait mal. Elle m'agace beaucoup! Je devrais aller au medecin.

At the moment, my ear is hurting. I should go to the doctor.

Re: Fun/interesting stories about language use
Not everyone is bilingual. My dad tried to buy a tractor from a bloke in Llanrwst, but he (the bloke, not my dad) was monolingual in Welsh. The bloke had to get his nephew round to translate. How many years ago was this? I'd bet you any money he'll be dead now. In any case, monolinguals aren't gene...

Re: Fun/interesting stories about language use
I think you may have missed the point of bilingual signage. Realistically in all probability no Welsh speaker is ever going to have trouble with an English sign, since everyone is functionally bilingual and the vast majority of people are native speakers of English alongside Welsh. But that doesn't...

Re: Sound Change Quickie Thread
Directly, it could become something like [ʃ], [ɕ], or [ç] - perhaps even more than one of them, depending on the surrounding environment - and from there there are of course many ways those consonants could go. Also, there is a certain tendency - at least among English speakers, not sure about othe...
