Re: The Contradictory Feelings Thread
@Nort: The comparison was to say that it is a rash judgement/overgeneralisation about people one has never met, based on hearsay. The implication was that Comorians were the most likely source of crime when there is no proof. Any question about demographics and who is immigrant who is not ws largely...

Re: The Contradictory Feelings Thread
Yes, which is why I was very disappointed to hear that me expressing my opinion was stepping on the opinion of her or her family. I would hazard an American comparison for the Comorian thing: it's a bit like a village in the Midwest suddenly Concerned about Mexicans when Trump starts his campaign. I...

Re: The Contradictory Feelings Thread
I think there may be an element of questioning codes when it is seen as inappropriate (that word again!). There is also the aspect of codes that I am used to seeing applied not being applied. To clarify, she said "I have values" followed up by my question "what do you mean by your values?" She does ...

Re: The Contradictory Feelings Thread
As expected, you look at this from an unexpected angle. And it helps a bit. For values, I expected to hear moral values. Which was why I started at what seemed to me to be a (to use your term) a hedonistic value. As an appropriate answer, I mean more or less "does this actually answer the question?"...

Re: The Contradictory Feelings Thread
It was her that had initially mentioned values, and I asked her what she meant by that. A major thing is that she defends hitting children because her parents did it to her, and she turned out alright. I oppose it on the grounds of it being violence, a bad example, and ineffective. A new thing is th...

Ah so the translation makes it appear to be a character called 'Mother' rather than an actual mother? I hypothesise that this example comes from a nineteenth century grammar. Could you confirm or deny or otherwise give information relating to said hypothesis?

Re: The Contradictory Feelings Thread
When asked about one's values, do yous think it's appropriate to respond 'to be respected' and 'to not steal'? I'm thinking about whether to leave my girlfriend and the main thing that blocks is the question of how to raise our hypothetical children, most particularly how to deal with misbehaviour. ...

Re: Good syntax books
Is his issue with the mistranslation or the choice of sentence or both or something else? What does he think about 'Dog bites man?' Mistranslating 'mother' instead of 'mom' isn't that bad, but it does change the tone, like it does in the English translation of Albert Camus' L'étranger (The Outsider)...

Re: Elections in various countries
It would certainly be preferable to Matteo Salvini. It seems we'll need to wait and see. I can see it taking longer than the Dutch and German negociations; it seems the parties were more ready to work with one another in those cases. Other elections to watch this year are the legislatives in Sweden ...

That's an interesting perspective and it is a worthwhile argument. I prefer to have them though, for the exposure to details of other languages.
Maybe a way to get both would be to add information about potential further reading on the topic?

Linguistic tidbit on 'bành mi': it appears to come from the French 'pain de mie' (white bread). So even the name comes from the colonial period. Popular etymology. Bánh [note tone; bành is a different word entirely, e.g. bành trướng "expand, spread") is attested before the colonial period as a Nôm ...

Re: Venting thread that still excludes eddy
Yeah, nems are quite like spring rolls. Wow, your description of banh mi seems even more restrictive than the definition. My initial hypothesis would be that (at least some) Vietnamese Americans heavily specialised. Peanut butter pie sure has the potential to be particularly thick. The peanut butter...

@Nort: I think the only Vietnamese food I'm familiar with are nems. As far as I can tell, 'banh mi' refers to either 'bread' or sandwich and is not particularly Vietnamese to start with. People can have one-sided stories about most countries, but, for America outsiders have generally multi-sided vie...

The only meaning of cereal bar that I know of is this: https://cdn.cdkitchen.com/images/cats/1336/cat-1336-720-1.jpg i.e. something you eat, not somewhere you go to. That might an appropriate generalisation if I was interested in more than one person even remotely related to the alt-right. Since my most recent (Scientific) publications, I've been flooded with a fuckton of spam/junk e-mails for predatory conferences and journals, and it's just gotten much worse after my first publication as a first-author ( despite me not including my e-mail on the publication! ). I wonder who on eart...

I'm absolutely in awe of cigarette prices... the most expensive 20-box of cigs you'll find here is around 3 euro.
