Re: Voting system and reform thread
How much research have you done into the research and work other people have done towards voting systems and their problems?

Re: Native speakers giving misleading information
Related: Strange, ad-hoc terminology people use when talking about the sounds of their language. I've heard English speakers use "hard" vs. "soft" to mean "voiced" vs. "voiceless" in either direction (i.e. both "hard" = "voiced" and "hard" = "voiceless"), especially when talking about voiceless/voi...

Re: Venting thread
A number of years ago, I realized that no matter how much I tried, it would be impossible for me to even read/watch the 1% best media ever, because the volume of things people have created is so high, that it would take ages just to experience even a tiny fraction of it. Since then, I've made peace ...

Re: Venting thread
I wish these people would just ignore me and let me suffer, than dedicate valuable time in their lives trying to help a lost cause. Certainly, time is valuable. But your time is also valuable. If I can expend say, an hour of my time and help you pull out of your depressive funk, giving you hours of...

Re: H/æ/lloween versus H/ɑ/lloween
More properly, "All Hallows' Evening", as November 1st is "All Hallows' Day", though because "hallow" has changed enough in meaning amongst the general populace, we now refer to November 1st as "All Saints' Day" much of the time. As for why we kept "Hallow' e'en", that's a different story.

Re: Venting thread
That and we programmers aren't afraid to use google and try the answers it comes up with. I worked on an issue on my pastor's computer today, and I told her what I had done and she blinked and said "That's...exactly what I would have done!" I then pointed out to her that there's no magic at all; at ...

Re: The Innovative Usage Thread
Thanks for the responses. It's interesting to learn that some other people do this as well. I use /ʒ/ in "convulsion" and "revision", but /ʃ/ in "propulsion" and "expulsion". I wonder if it's related to word frequency. Did you mean to write"revision," or is that a typo for "revulsion"? I did indeed...

Re: The Innovative Usage Thread
Has anybody heard or used a pronunciation with /ʒ/ in words ending in "-lsion," such as "propulsion," "convulsion," "expulsion"? I just realized today that I hesitate between /ʒ/ and /ʃ/ in this environment. I did a bit of research, and it looks like /ʃ/ is far more common; I haven't found any refe...

Re: Can the ALC be read by itself?
The first LCK is, in my opinion, a much better introduction to conlanging. It's fairly broad in topic choice, but it gives you a reasonable start.
The ALCK delves more into depth on certain topics, which can be useful if you want more information on those topics.

Re: Settings for your conlangs?
For me, the languages serve as happenstance window dressing for my conworld—the culture, people, and politics of which is honestly more important than the exact details of their languages. I plan on having the conlangs be "only in the appendix" things, outside of the nicety of giving me a reasonably...

Re: Venting thread that embraces everyone without distinctio
Curious. The rule is exactly the same here, too (or were when I were a lad, at any rate), which suggests that either it's very old or it's the result of (or at least been spread by) some particular TV show. It's probably not old, though, because the taboo on age differences is growing stronger and ...

Vent time. My daughter has been an absolute pill lately. She fell asleep still in her clothes (normally we at least try...

That's teeny-tiny. My aunt and her husband are 12 years apart (24 vs 36 when they married). My parents are 8 years apart (20 vs 28, respectively). I had a friend in high school whose mother was in her early 30's, and her father in his 60's or so. Her mother was 18 when she was born; I never really ...
