...now there's a weird one. The bakery I got them is, ironically, an Italian bakery, so they offer a ricotta filling. I've been told it's actually quite good, but I'm still skeptical (plus it cost more).

Re: Happy Things Thread

I brought in paczki for my coworkers today! I was originally just going to get a couple for myself, then decided to be a nice person and ordered two boxes to share. The bakery where I got them had a bunch of interesting flavors--the surprising favorite (to me) was apple with a cinnamon/powdered suga...

Re: What are you reading, watching and listening to?

Been reading some Louis L'Amour western novels lately. They're a major part of my childhood (my dad owns most of his books, so I've read pretty much everything he's ever written), but still a lot of fun to go back and read as an adult, too. Even if they're, well, very predictable. And occasionally r...

lol, it was a very small conservative rural school in Michigan. Not a lot of hippies in sight! We did ceramics in both middle and high school art classes, it was a lot of fun.

They don't cancel school under those conditions? If no one can get to the school, it seems rather pointless to hold classes.

It almost seems like an intensifier to me--to really emphasize "all of us, yes, ALL."

(EDIT: although of course it can be filling multiple roles at once)

Re: Will singular "they" be as acceptable as "you" in formal

I mean, I've got a couple of friends who use "they", and I've never had a problem using it as a pronoun to refer to them. I agree that the transition from a different pronoun to "they" can be difficult and have a lot of slip-ups, but that's because you're used to one pronoun and are transitioning to...

Re: Age, Leisure Work and Motivation

College was great for conlanging for me--a lot of time spent sitting in boring classes, needing something to occupy myself. (in retrospect, I would've saved myself a lot of grief if I hadn't been such a goody-two-shoes who never skipped class. Would've read a lot less Mass Effect fanfiction, though....

From somebody talking about working at an animal sanctuary:

"We brought water to empty bowls by buckets."

The intended meaning:
More: show
The hoses to fill water bowls for the animals were frozen, so they had to carry water in buckets.

Re: Classical Composers

I think you may be looking at analysis, rather than reviews. You can get analysis of any genre (yes, even pop music), but of course most fans don't follow any of it. This may well be so, but is there anyone out there who genuinely does reviews of classical music? As in, I'm going to sit down and gi...

Re: What do you call this?

"Cut in line" or "cut in front of me" for me. I would understand what "butt in line" meant, but wouldn't say it myself, and might be a little surprised to hear it. The context I think of when I hear "butt in" would be someone butting into a conversation or event--inserting themselves into it, even t...

I've looked up the news story in question, and that interpretation appears to be correct. Peter Bone, an MP, has left his wife for a physical therapist (who apparently is also married).

Re: Your first conscript

Funnily enough for someone who got into conlanging from Lord of the Rings, I didn't try to create a conscript until I'd already been messing about with conlangs for a few years. I don't know if I ever actually had a full alphabet (it's always been an alphabet for Tirina), but I at least had enough t...

Re: What do you call this?

New question: You make plans with someone and then they don't show up. What verb(s) would you use to describe what they did? "They no-showed." Alternately, they flaked out or skipped out. Upon reading everyone else's responses, "X bailed on me"/"X bailed on the party" would also be normal for me, a...

Re: What are you reading, watching and listening to?

Minor update to my KOTOR 2 review, now that I've finished my replay! I still maintain it's an excellent game and extremely fun to play, but man, I forgot how disjointed the ending is even with mods. Basically all the "transition" bits were never created, so stuff just sort of happens without having ...

Re: Translations of the Bible

^^ I think I agree with you. Certainly parts of the Bible can be kinda esoteric (we will now break for a six-hour word study on "gold" in the book of Leviticus), but by and large I think if people would actually read the thing, they'd discover a lot of the confusing bits aren't that confusing in con...

Here's what I'm playing, anyway... Watching TLJ got me to replay Knights of the Old Republic 2, and man, I forgot how good this game is.
