Re: A question about proto-nostratic's Wikipedia page
I dug up a Proto-Nostratic dictionary a while back which was probably one of the main sources for the Wikipedia page, and it used ∇ rather than V. The edit was probably to bring the orthography in line with what's used in the literature. Note that the Wikipedia page mentions that the listed etymolog...

Re: One-syllable words with specific technical or rare meani
To be fair, English has quite a few monosyllabic names for trees: ash, beech, elm, oak, peach, pear, pine, plum... I'm sure there are more that have slipped my mind.

Re: Akana Conlang Relay 2011 (The Never Ending Relay)
As far as I know nothing has actually been written about northeast Tuysafa outside of your own article on Proto-Northeastern, but based on the climate New England and eastern Canada would probably be a decent enough analogue.

Re: Akana Conlang Relay 2011 (The Never Ending Relay)
As I recall, the current consensus is that Akana's moon is somewhat larger but somewhat farther away than Earth's, though I'm not sure if there's been any discussion of where, exactly, it came from. As for what you're talking about, I remember reading a thought experiment that might interest you, ab...

Re: Features found only in conlangs
However, some Caucasian languages are described as affricating their uvular stops. This appears to be pretty common in languages with uvulars, actually, as was discussed earlier in this very thread. Likewise, /c/ seems to commonly surface as [cç] in many languages, though I'm not sure if that count...

What, exactly, is a эпохаский, and why don't you transliterate the term?
What part of the world do you live in?
Over the next century and a half, what's going to happen with the drought situation in the American west?

Re: Features found only in conlangs
Tamil doesn't have any fricatives either, though a few may appear allophonically between vowels and in loan words. This is presumably the case with some other Dravidian languages as well, since Proto-Dravidian is reconstructed with no fricatives, though most seem to have developed at least one throu...

Re: Akana Conlang Relay 2011 (The Never Ending Relay)
The ocean current map on the wiki does show a current from the vicinity of southern Peilaš carrying warm water as far as the northeastern most tip of Tuysáfa, passing through the gap between Sumarušuxi and the Ttiruku arc. However, as far as I know this map was composed before the idea of a land bri...

Re: Sound Change Quickie Thread
I'm sure somebody has asked this before, but I've had no luck finding it. It's famously rare for palatal or palatalized velar stops to shift to plain velars; I was just curious if anybody knew of any case where this is known or believed to have happened unconditionally.

That's why I really like your idea of grain-growing Ultimundic speakers: they explain why both continents have the same grain crops, which is something that bugged me for years. I'd be in favor of explaining some of the livestock similarities in the same way; certainly this would work for sheep, an...

Re: Methods of generating lexicon
When I was coming up with roots for a recent a priori conlang idea I had, I pulled out the Oxford Introduction to Proto-Indo-European and the Proto-Indo-European world, which has a nice thematic dictionary that takes up most of the book. Similar to the method blank stare II described, I took roots I...

Re: A map of my tectonic plates!
I assume the subduction zones would be at any convergent boundary involving an oceanic plate? More or less, though it would technically be more correct to say that they involve convergent boundaries involving oceanic crust . Plates usually consist of both continental and oceanic crust in different ...

Re: A map of my tectonic plates!
Subduction zones would be good, too, though I suppose it only makes sense to put those in if you already know where the continents are. Also, I'm assuming that these are relatively rough borders that smooth out a lot of detail. Actual tectonic plates tend to be more jagged, particularly when the bou...

Re: A map of my tectonic plates!
Plate C's boundaries are actually very similar to those of the African Plate, which is mostly surrounded by divergent boundaries, save for the convergent boundary with the Eurasian Plate in the north. Overall it looks ok to me, but I'm no geologist.

Re: Akana Conlang Relay 2011 (The Never Ending Relay)
I like your overlay maps for Peilaš, but I think your Tuysáfa ones are a little off if you intend for the climates to match up. I think it's highly counterproductive to simply accept what's already been written as fait accompli. If we want Akana to make sense as a plausible, Earth-like world, we may...
