Re: The dream thread
Somebody was tentatively planning to decorate their home with paintings by a renowned French artist named Mogabe, or Mogabre. His work looked sort of like painted freeze-frames of NES Super Mario.

Re: The dream thread
I was walking around London on a nice day and everything was awesome. I reached a huge, neoclassical church that I believed to be the city's Catholic cathedral. I walked up the steps and stood under the portico. The doors were open so I peered inside. At the other end of the nave there was a big poo...

Re: The dream thread
I was Edward VI, and dad was being crowned - so I was running all around the castle, trying to find a proper set of clothes for the coronation/feast. But there were two locker rooms on opposite ends of the building, and I also had to shlep Elizabeth's outfit from one to the other. I asked somebody w...

Re: Spanish phonological observation
Also this confusion maybe be very ancient, since the Romans used to say: Beati Hispani quibus bibere vivere est! "Blessed be the Spanish for whom to drink is to live!" Citation fucking needed. I have yet to find anything suggesting that the b~v merger is that old, and I HAVE found things to suggest...

I disagree with WeepingElf - I love the vowel system. I don't see enough people using rhotacized vowels! And the script is gorgeous.

Re: Conlang relay [relocated] (aka "The Cursed Relay")
Looks good so far! I've just gone through the PL lexicon to figure out possible protoforms (have a look in your inbox for the results), and it seems to work quite well. The frequency of proto-phonemes is somewhat skewed though wrt cross-linguistic markedness, so the next ~100 words added to Proto-L...

Re: Conlang relay [relocated] (aka "The Cursed Relay")
I found myself suddenly thinking about Pre-Proto-Lukpanic, the ancestor of Lukpanic, and those "few small isolate languages scattered across the northwestern part of the continent." If anybody's interested in developing these, I encourage them! Anyway, here's the quick 'n' dirty phonology and SCs th...

Someone named Szeseg was on Jeopardy, and the game was just starting. Szeseg got the first question of the night right, Alex seemed reluctant to acknowledge him and after a few seconds said "Well, you're finally right" even though Szeseg was a returning champion. Another person near me euphemized i...

All the hipsters were hanging out in Afghanistan. The latest trend was to hold shows and so forth in bombed-out buildings; there was something going on in the ruins of a church in Kandahar. But I decided to journey elsewhere and ended up in downtown Manhattan. I saw the bedraggled remnants of Occupy...

Re: Conlang relay [relocated] (aka "The Cursed Relay")
Either way, I'll probably update the Culture of Ishe article when you've published a bit more on Poalubgum and Fu in order to reflect the "revised" Lukpanic culture. Sure. I still see them, to be clear, as a relatively peaceful people*. My general suggestion, though, is "go nuts." I use Lukpanic as...

Re: Conlang relay [relocated] (aka "The Cursed Relay")
I believe you said once that she was modeled after Tori Amos? Thus Tåle, Tori, whatever. I originally wanted the Lukpanab to be a nice, agreeable, peaceful people. Now I've sort of lost interest in that notion... they were not warlike, sure, but that doesn't preclude a taste for human sacrifice... A...

Re: Conlang relay [relocated] (aka "The Cursed Relay")
I needed a break from my Relay language, so I decided to do something with Lukpanic. Specifically, the language of the island city of Poalugbum ( Faɽmu ), where the native Lukpanic dialect survives. It's called Fu . My artistic intentions are for city and language both to be slightly sinister, with ...

I got on a bus to Mexico City, arriving in about an hour. But it looked more like a small provincial town. The bus depot was right on the town square. The place was deserted except for a few bars and places catering to tourists; it gradually dawned on me that I was not in Mexico but in some Mexican-...

I was seeing a grade schoolers' theatrical production of Beowulf. Two of my friends talked loudly and incessantly during the performance, and got booted out by the house manager, who then had me help her pull down a murphy bed from the wall. -- In Rotterdam, a metal playground slide spiraled all the...

That is a capital idea. Dimana Lokud would fit in well alongside the Miwan languages. Someone should make a linguistic map of that whole area... One of my ideas for that area is that Lewsfárah, and then Mɨdu inherit the Fáralo colonies of the South Coast, so a form of Namɨdu ends up being spoken alo...

I went to the only surviving business from Dutch New Amsterdam, a sandwich shop called Kerguelen's. They sold big, greasy sandwiches. The proprietor's wife sat inside smoking a cigarette, which in NY is illegal and almost unheard-of in a place that serves food, but I figured they owned the place so ...

I raise /ai/ according to "the rules" - with the exceptions (as with most people, apparently) "spider" and, optionally, "cider."
