Re: Cool or Trendy Languages
People do learn a bit of language for the cool factor, but it's rarely the language itself that has all the cool. For example, the number of white kids who study Japanese is way higher than the number of white kids who study Korean, despite Korean being the clearly superior language. Why do they do ...

Re: Istion - an Age of Sail Conworld.
No, that's just another collaborative project. I mean take planets that people have already made, and cook the books so that they are in the same universe. The rules of how soft or hard the sci-fi is would be based on the creations, not vice versa. Hopefully you could select only those creations tha...

Re: Istion - an Age of Sail Conworld.
Has anyone tried just taking their pre-existing conworlds and tweaking them so they fit together? Very few people work out all the parts of a planet in detail, so there should be holes. You could put all this effort into stitching together the details you've already got. Terrible idea?

Re: Appliquéd & Crocheted - Peculiar inflexion of borrowings
Well, they usually say [h]erb with the H intact. And I know some ignorant sons of bitches actually say "[paIjElla]" when referring to the classic Spanish dish. You might be thinking of the whole "pæsta" "tæco" phenomenon, but I think that's more to do with the Brits not having [a], and having to mak...

Sal, maybe it's an Americanism. I can confirm [fI'le] is the most common pronunciation in the states. How do you not know that after your people made that remake of Gordon Ramsay's hit American TV show?

What's noteworthy about either of these? Do you expect English speakers to say [kroSEtEd] ? Why would they ever do that?

Re: Ancient Egyptian & Etymologies
The vowels of ancient Egyptian is relevant to etymology. When you look up IE words and their PIE roots, do you care what the vowels are? That might be an important step to understanding where these words come from in Afro-Asiatic.

There's not much to say about them mechanically, since they all kind of work the same way. Not unrealistic, just... blah.
But aesthetically, these are amazing. 5/5. I would love to see larger samples of these; they are a joy to look at.

Re: I saw it on the Facebook
I feel more comfortable talking about unfamiliar things sometimes with a definite article. It somehow presents the noun more carefully. Which of these people, for example, do you think flies out Dorfenfutter more often, the one who calls it "The Dorfenfutter International Airport," or the one who ca...

These are great examples, except "so:su," which certainly doesn't imply worchester sauce. It's used as a generic word for any kind of sauce. Constantly. All over the place. But yeah, there's plenty of other examples for Japanese terms for European things, like Clawgrip pointed out.

What are you people talking about with this Romance crap? Have you ever bothered to look up any of these names? They are all based on West African bastardizations of Arabic. For example, Jamal, Jameela, from Arabic "beautiful." Sure, many of them are completely improvised, but we can discount those ...
