Re: Words you've learned recently
Tankero - crappy English with a heavy Finnish accent. Just to clarify, the event described in that WP article is just a joke, not something that actually happened.

Re: What are you listening to? -- Non-English Edition
Ah no, these are all from this year. Three of the songs are form the Estonian selection, and two from the Hungarian (plus one not related to ESC at all). The winner of the Estonian selection was Elina Netšajeva and, AWS won the Hungarian selection. Actually, let me just check Wikipedia... This year ...

They've always had, even though the majority is in English. I haven't counted the number of non-English songs this year though (or any other year).

Off topic: And why the hell isn't widespreadly a commonly used word? I can't remember what I'm supposed to say prescriptively without resorting to a longer phrase. Just saying "widely" is clear in context, I think.sorry can't comment on the rest of the post. Ha, thanks! Sometimes my word-searching ...

I have time, because I'm unemployed, but I have no energy. And it's not just conlanging, there's a lot of stuff that I want to want to do, but I just don't feel like doing it.

Re: Japanese sample in Advanced Language Construction
Thanks, Qwynegold. I missed the bit about the comma. I'd change the translation, then, to the much simpler "Unlike big sister, I hate boys and such." "Unlike you" might be better. (The speaker is 16, and responding to a comment from her sister that the boys at school think she's weird, so in Englis...

Re: Japanese sample in Advanced Language Construction
Chigatte is the conjunctive form of chigau "to be different". It's not the main verb in this sentence. Oneechan to chigatte means like "unlike big sister". Kirai , or dai(k)kirai is special, because it acts like a verb, but formally it's an adjective. Kirai means dislike, and daikirai means hate (i...

I only learned IIRC through the ZBB, and have rarely seen it elsewhere. I think it has to do with what kind of conversations you are having at different sites.

Re: British Sitcoms
Does Queer as Folk count as a sitcom? I remember there being some bits in it that were kinda like a sitcom. No, it's considered a drama. Ah, I think it's like a mixture of drama and sitcom. Or maybe I'm just misremembering the show. I think Davies' successor show Cucumber qualifies as "sitcom" thou...

When I first read the first few posts of this thread, I thought to myself "hmmmm, I've watched a bunch of British shows, but none of them were sitcoms. Oh, Little Britain! No wait, that's not a sitcom." But when I kept reading I found several I used to watch. Mr. Bean - It was funny back then, but I...

Re: Odd pronunciation of a Chinese name
Apparently, they were never taught how to sound out words, in the theory that English spelling is so irregular it's best to just skip it and teach words as indivisible wholes. But this apparently led to difficulties in pronouncing words from other languages, even languages with simple spelling rule...
