Re: Accents

Yep, me too. Even though I was familiar with their spoken forms, I recall pronouncing chaos [ʧɑˈoʊ̯z] and albeit [ɑlˈbɑɪ̯t]. Funnily before I checked its pronunciation, I always assumed albeit was pronounced [ɑlˈbɑɪ̯t], even before studying German. I still find it strange pronouncing it all be it ....

Re: Venting thread that embraces everyone without distinctio

"ought not [verb]" sounds... awkward, to my ears. "ought not to [verb]" and "ought to not [verb]" sound better, but I prefer "oughtn't [verb]" overall. And the grammar book insisted as well on "oughtn't to [verb]." But you're not the first to say that and I agree. Of course "ought not" is not commo...

Do you happen to know based on which word pair are the sound changes for proto languages posited? I'm specifically interested in the Altaic branch, but also in other proto Kartvelian, Northeast Caucaisan and Northwest Caucasian.

Re: Sound Change Quickie Thread

So after having learned about one of the world's rarest sounds, the bilabial oral egressive click ʘ↑, found in Damin , I began wondering how it could come into being in a natlang. Maybe something along the lines of kpʼ → ʘ↑, pkʼ → ʘ↑ or even uncoditional pʼ → ʘ↑ in a more extreme case. These do seem...

Re: Venting thread that embraces everyone without distinctio

So I apparently fell for some very cheap fb scam. I'm usually very wary of what links I click, but that notifications fooker caught me off guard. As soon as I switched back the tabs I saw it has redirected me to a blog called something like h32hn2jnhjkas8d9895njk89 on blogspot.ru (I think). Closed i...

Re: Member Countries and Known Languages

We’re talking about phonemes, and the reduction of unstressed /ɛ/ to [ə] is not present in all dialects (some Southern dialects don’t do it, for instance). So which one is original? I've left with the impression that unstressed vowels in Proto-Germanic either dropped or reduced to [ə] and only late...

The Sumerian word for wheel is perhaps relevant in this case, would help if anyone knows it. If it's not anything like the PIE word, then the technology may have not been directly transferred.

So I dreamt about this word chenka [t͡ʃɛnka] or [t͡ʃenka] and I wonder what it means. It's bugging me so hard. It's not weird in and of itself, but there's something about it that really makes me want know its meaning. I'm not sure of the spelling and script either and wiktionary doesn't return any ...

Re: This thing I cannot shake

[kʲ] is simply [+velar +palatalised] or [+dorsal +palatalised] if you will. [+front] and [+back] are vowel features, not consonant ones.
Palatalised uvulars are impossible to pronounce the last time I checked.

Re: European languages before Indo-European

Yes, if PIE replaced those languages but PIE speakers not the people speaking them (i.e., the people already living there started speaking PIE). I'm not sure that's a valid model given our current understanding of ppulation displacements around that time, or whether if true, is at all significant. ...

How could Tocharian lose a distinction as prominent as voicing or aspiration or glottalisation or what have you and merge three stop series to one? Lately I've been wondering if rather the three series are an innovation of core PIE and that whatever the two-way distinction Anatolian languages had, i...

I'm going to assume that parrots, giraffes, some kind of beans and carrots, strawberries and other kinds of berries all exist in West Tuysáfa. Some Tuysáfan language had a word for donkey, so there's also that. Given there are pears, it's not a stretch for apples also to be present. What about potat...
