Re: Happy Things Thread

I'm getting an article published in a peer-reviewed journal!!! Although it won't appear in print until about a year from now (which is why people are starting not to like ink-and-paper journals anymore). Congratulations!! Also isn't that true! It takes a ridiculously long time. I don't look forward...

Re: Venting thread that embraces everyone without distinctio

Luxembourgish credit card (Visa) keeps getting refused when I try to use it for purchases, even though I know I'm still well under my limit. I'm so confused... at least I can ask what's going on in person on Thursday or Friday, and at least I have a back-up card, but still, it's a nuisance. Also, no...

Re: Venting thread that embraces everyone without distinctio

And I know I shouldn't care (or should care less), but I do worry. What about your parents? JAL He doesn't talk to our father (at all; he didn't tell our father that he was back in NC for a few weeks), and I don't know what all he's told our mother about the situation... and it's really also the th...

Re: Venting thread that embraces everyone without distinctio

The situation with my brother really concerns me, and not just because he managed to do a lot of damage to my mom's car (that first passed to me before passing to him). He kinda failed out of grad school by failing both of his attempts for candidacy in the Ph.D. program and stopped attending classes...

Re: Venting thread that embraces everyone without distinctio

Minor vent: Today, the temperature here in Mettwurstland peaked at around 30ºC/86ºF. Normally wouldn't be a problem... except the lab I'm working in doesn't really have air conditioning! So trying to do lab work at around 28ºC is not a good thing at all, especially when one of the chemicals I'm usin...

Re: Venting thread that embraces everyone without distinctio

Pros: good food, happy people, a sense of optimism Cons: everything's crazy expensive Here in Luxembourg, at least there's good food and generally nice people. But everything's so expensive: rent's horrible, going out to a restaurant drains your wallet fairly quickly, even grocery prices are pretty...

Re: Help your fluency in a nifty way

On that subject, my vacation's going awesomely. I visited a former coworker in Clermont-Ferrand, and she offered me a place to stay with her family. Her family's very nice: for example, her husband invited me to accompany him on a private plane to the Île d'Yeu, a little jewel off the west coast of...

Re: Help your fluency in a nifty way

I had [forgotten] that in France, the vacations start the sa...

Re: Venting thread that embraces everyone without distinctio

How do I know what is normal use? A bed ... so clearly sleeping ... and sex would not be so exotic, but one rather large man and one very large man? I'm nervous for so many reasons about having giant Arab man come and visit me, but the thought of my loft-bed collapsing, potentially injuring us and ...

About a week until I go on vacation to central France. At last. Hoping the strikes will have entirely stopped by then, but, with Euro 2016 going on, I sadly don't have much hope about that.

Re: Regional accents are losing the battle to standard Engli

The standard Southern drawl also seems to be disappearing from North Carolina, or at least the larger cities, though that's also partly a product of NC having a lot of people moving into the state from other parts of the US as of late (especially from the Midwest). And I mostly notice this in Fayett...

Re: Venting thread that embraces everyone without distinctio

In Austin, I don't think people feel they can survive without turning on the AC at some point in the year. This is the case in practically all of Texas. And often the AC is turned on fairly early in the year, like in April or so. When I lived in Snowhio, though, I didn't use AC in my apartment, lar...

So our passports now have something that's probably pretty rare in them. We were stamped out of Schengen only to be stamped back into Schengen a few hours later. We were on our flight from Amsterdam to Detroit, all ready for take off when the pilot comes on and says the plane has engine failure. Ev...

Automatic transmission. (I don't feel comfortable at all with a manual.) Oh, ok, I thought you had some weird handicap or something :). Automatic transmission shouldn't be a problem at all, nowadays, I think? JAL It's normally a bit more expensive and the availability's a bit more reduced, at least...

Plus, finding a car I can drive can be a bit tricky... You have special requirements? Automatic transmission. (I don't feel comfortable at all with a manual.) I don't think a car would help me in this case, especially because there's also an oil refinery strike in France at the same time. A lot of ...

Re: Venting thread that embraces everyone without distinctio

Yea, you're lucky to be avoiding it in Lux. I think that we might have to get a room at a hotel at the airport, even though I have little motivation to waste even more money, but with a plane leaving at 10AM and uncertainty with the trains (these strikes were not preplanned meaning no one knows til...

I'm starting to freak out that the strikes which are going until at least May 31st will still be going on the 1st when we have to take a plane to the US from Brussels airport. We have to get there from Liège with lots of luggage and I just don't know what to do... I'm assuming you mean train strike...

Re: Travel advice thread-Currently Japan and Brazil

Anyway, apparently it takes about 18 hours to drive, but of course in reality you'd probably want to stop for a snack somewhere in that journey, and the petrol costs looks like they may be greater than the train fare. In my research, once you have two people travelling (rather than just one, and, h...

Re: Travel advice thread-Currently Japan and Brazil

Does anyone have advice on how one could get from Belgium to Stockholm and back? Ridesharing might work but it's a long distance. I can't seem to get prices on trains and trains take ages, like 1 day. And we can't fly. So I don't know how to get there. :( The issue is that your best non-flying bet ...

Re: Travel advice thread-Currently Germany and Japan

Also, those of you who are in Japan at the same time (Finlay? Clawgrip? Vampireshark? anyone else???), would you be interested in a meetup? Sadly, I'm not (and won't be) in Japan: my move emptied my bank account, and I need to save up for a trip to the US in July for work/personal vacation. Though ...
