Re: Incorrect pronunciations you have (or have had) to unlea

Interesting. The stereotype that I think I remember about Parisian speakers is that they pronounce word-final e muets in situations where other speakers would not. So "garage" would come out as "garageuh." Is my impression accurate? Maybe I'm misremembering and this is only supposed to apply to wor...

Re: Help your fluency in a nifty way

Precisamente, trato de hablar con un acento un poquito diferente del estándar. Cuando imito un acento británico, trato de hacer un acento de Londres in lugar de la Pronunciación Aceptada. Cuando imito un acento estadounidense, apunto a un acento del Norte del Medio Oeste (con el Desplazamiento Vocá...

Re: Venting thread

I'm voting Macron, personally. I don't particularly like the guy, but I don't have much of a choice. It's obvious that Le Pen will win the first round, the only question is who is going to be second. I dread to see Fillon vs Le Pen on the second round: I'd be forced to vote for Fillon, and I really ...

Re: Incorrect pronunciations you have (or have had) to unlea

I also read "garage" as ["gæreɪd͡ʒ]. Actually, I still find the American pronunciation of this word weird. The American pronunciation is a lot closer to the original French pronunciation. To my French ears, not really. OK, it's clos er , but not really close. First, because of the English-language ...

Re: Help your fluency in a nifty way

Pues, pensaba que hablar un idioma extranjero como si fuera su lengua maternal era difícil. Well, I thought that to speak a foreign language as well as a native speaker was difficult. Podéis escuchar a mi pronunciación aquí: http://www.incatena.org/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=44719 You can listen to my pro...

Re: Confusing headlines and other trips down the garden path

I read it as "the Chinese officials who were denied a visa are about to attend a conference".

Re: Incorrect pronunciations you have (or have had) to unlea

As a non-native speaker, I had a lot of them. For instance, I initially read "curse" with the CURE vowel. I also read "garage" as ["gæreɪd͡ʒ]. Actually, I still find the American pronunciation of this word weird.

Re: Help your fluency in a nifty way

Sí. Se me fue de la lengua. Era precisamente el objetivo de mi texto 《Arthur the Rat》: yo quería saber si es posible adivinar de dónde soy con mi acento. Cuando fue en los Estados Unidos, algunas personas pensaban que acabé de Inglaterra. Yeah. Cat's out of the bag. Actually, that was the point of ...

Re: Help your fluency in a nifty way

Oui, franchement c'est bizarre. Les gens se sont ont disparu s . :( Je suis sur la côte de la Caroline du nord pour mes vacances. On a un AirBnB sur la plage, il est vraiment beau. ¿ Quieres decir que el AirBnB es hermoso ? ¿ O que el paisaje en general es hermoso ? Si es el secundo, pienso que deb...

Arthur the Rat

I wanted to record myself reading a text. I don't like Please Call Stella because of its weird prosody, so I used Arthur the Rat instead. You can find the text here: http://www.howtodoaccents.com/sg_userfiles/Arthur_The_Rat.docx I recorded myself with two different accents: http://vocaroo.com/i/s0T2...
