I also get the 404, but when I search for the terms in the link, what I get looks what I'd call broadly Pflastersteine ("cobblestones") and specifically Katzenköpfe, lit. "cat heads".

@Imralu: I'm like that, sometimes. And I learnt that it often simply helps to explain your own weirdness to the people you have alienated. Example: not long ago, a friend called me out on why I never congratulate him on his birthday. Truth is, I remembered around what time of the month it was, but n...

Re: A Very Brief Explanation of the British Election

Very much simplified and a bit exaggerating the positions, I can see that there are two different groups who voted for Brexit: There is a third group in this, if very small: the Loony Lefties who want to leave the EU because in their view it is a neo-liberal bourgeois hell-scape dominated by an unc...

Re: A Very Brief Explanation of the British Election

The Brexiteers claim - and, let's be honest, on this they are quite right, that restricting the flow of goods and people between Europe and Britain is probably the single most important part of "what people voted for" in the referendum. Hmmm... I have my doubts on the "restricting the flow of goods...

Re: Pop music genres - help?

Question 2: what is "traditional pop", and how does it relate to pop? (recent nominees include Bob Dylan, Lady Gaga, Willie Nelson, Andrea Boccelli (!?), and Seth MacFarlane) I would have guessed that it means "pop with more traditional instrumentation", but the list you give seems very random. Bes...

Re: Pop music genres - help?

Well, you wouldn't be able to say whether they're "Indie", because for this their position vis-à-vis the music industry is the deciding factor. E.g., this is by a bona fide Indie band, but it sounds like Cliff Richard, the epitome of favourite-son-in-law wholesome pop. The Kooks, indie? Their debut...

That being said, I also think Celtic Woman (if that's the sort of thing you mean by "Irish Folk") is overrated, just in general. :P My favorite Irish folk music is probably sean-nós . Re: Pop music genres - help?

@Sal: I think others have been trying to say that, but using Grammy nominations is probably one of the less optimal ways to find out what style a certain piece of music is. The categories are limited, so 1) they have to cram in things into categories that don't really belong there; 2) there's a lot ...

Re: The upcoming (September 24) German federal election

Also, a new election could see further AfD gains due to all the chaos among the more mainstream parties. That risk can't be excluded, but the current polls give no indication for a significant rise in AfD votes right now. In general, most pundits are more worried that another four years of GroKo, w...

Re: Pop music genres - help?

Whatever exactly you add to pop to get rock... if you add a lot more of that, you get hard rock. Louder, more banging drums, the singer sounds angrier, you can't play it for Mom at all . Maybe your mom, and mine. ;-) That criterion stopped working some point in the 90s. The first generation of e.g....

Re: The upcoming (September 24) German federal election

@Sal: purely legally, they could do so, but that would mean blowing up their own party. While CDU and CSU formally are two parties, they go into the elections as one unit and are seen by voters and members as such. It's a bit as if the Scottish Tories had their own seat and a veto at the negotiation...

Re: The upcoming (September 24) German federal election

It might sound crazy, but would it be possible to have CDU-SPD coalition without CSU? I know a lot of people who would like that, but no, it won't happen. CDU and CSU are joined at the hip; even if they're legally separate parties, they form one parliamentary group ( Fraktion ), since 1949. There's...

Re: The upcoming (September 24) German federal election

For the last almost 70 years, it was mostly boringly predictable who would govern Germany after the election results wre announced (the exception being 1969, when the CDU thought they'd continue the first Grand Coalition with the SPD, but the latter teamed up with the FDP instead). This time is real...
