Re: The Contradictory Feelings Thread

I have been feeling that I'm moving up the Kinsey scale. Which is a new and strange experience for me. I'd say now that I'm closer to a low 5 / high 4 (5= predominantly homosexual, only incidentally heterosexual, 4= predominantly homosexual, but more than incidentally hetero ). To compare to the pre...

Re: Negation on Middle Arabic

The term 3āmmiyya muthaqqafa has been mentioned here and it does sound like what OP is referring to. In my experience with Moroccans, MSA negators seem to be preserved with more scrutiny when they speak with me in MSA. This contrasts to my experiences with Egyptians who tend to speak with MSA vocabu...

Re: Neo-Akkadian/Kaschdean/A-Leschān A-Labār

I've attempted to make a neo-Akkadian lang myself too! I'm interested to see what Greek, Persian, Arabic, and Turkish influences you put in! What motivates the transliteration of /ʃ/ as <sch>? What are the sound changes that you've imagined from ancient Akkadian to the present day?

Arabic. Modern Standard for the past four years at university. Sprinkled with conversational competency in Egyptian Arabic. But since I'm staying in Morocco for the year, most of my effort goes to Moroccan Arabic now.

Re: COUNTING IN YOUR CONSTRUCTED LANGUAGES, CONSTRUCTED DIAL

@Janko, both of the languages I provided don't really have words for 9 and 10 because both count in base-8 rather than base-10. That is not to say, however, that one cannot say that 9 or 10 of things exist. So, here they are, for your list: Emp: ŋawo tsá tawo (9) and ŋawo tsá sí (10) Shtasa: tabdhïn...

Hi Janko, I don't remember if I gave you these numbers already, but here they (in base eight) are in Empotle7á and Shtåså (can you spot the shared etymologies ;D) Empotle7á 1. tawo 2. sí 3. nalló 4. mená 5. 7otlá 6. mení 7. nallé 10. ngawo Shtåså 1. tab 2. shi 3. nasty 4. nheddh 5. us 6. mech 7. nai...

Re: Linguistic Struggles Thread

At the host family in Morocco today, host father asks me if /stãws/ was a good time to go to the pool tomorrow. I thought he had slipped into French (not an uncommon occurrence here!) and so I got confused. Host dad sees that I'm not understanding and repeats himself in Modern Standard Arabic: sitta...

Perhaps they were driven to conquer for partly religious reasons, not unlike the Kennan. (Perhaps they even informed the Destroyer myth that featured in Anheshnalåks culture.) There are lots of possibilities to explore - we may not have tigon-riders any more, but I reckon there's still plenty of ro...

Re: Akana Conlang Relay 2011 (The Never Ending Relay)

I think I have mostly finished fleshing out the sound changes for the major dialects of Gezoro now. (That is, I'm done with them unless I come across any phonologically illegal sequences when I have a closer look at the morphology.) They build upon Kodé's changes on the wiki page, add a bit more de...

It's been a productive day:
*One hour ago* I will do some work on some names in a conlang
*Now* Discovers potential ablaut system in that conlang's proto-lang via etymological work on said names.

And leftover Ethiopian food to eat for dinner. Yummmmm

I was under the impression that Earth's polar areas were quite temperate several hundreds of millions of years ago. If my recollection is correct, then you wouldn't need a planet with a radical axial tilt to achieve a temperate Arctic/Antarctic zone.

Re: Longest Word In Your Conlang

Verbs in Empotle7á , like its cousin Ayčasamo (both are set in the same language family in Akana), can get pretty long with affixes and incorporated nouns. So, my go-to example is the conjugated verb látáotéwowulipétháneŋam , which roughly means, "we will make them eat the meal of crabs". Parsing: l...
