velar-uvular fricative contrasts also occur in Seri, and are common in the Qiangic languages and probably in the Tibetan dialects of Sichuan and Yunnan as well

Re: A Very Brief Explanation of the British Election

OK, apparently the impeachment didn't have as much popular support/impact as I thought. My impression is that Clinton played for different target demographics in 2016 than in 2008, and that that didn't go over well. But I can't find polls for the 2008 Democratic primary with demographic breakdowns, ...

Re: Classical Composers

Holy minimalism tends to be more accessible than minimalism proper - it's more consonant, and it tries to connect minimalism with mediaeval religious music, rather than with the avant garde. Minimalism isn't accessible? Look at the history of pop music. To this layman, it doesn't look healthy - at ...

Also, any idea why the t is so often pronounced in "often" but basically never in thistle, castle, listen, fasten, mustn't? Is it that the FRICATIVE /t/ SCHWA /l/n/ thingy didn't happen as widespreadly with /f/ as with /s/ and held on in some dialects to respread, or there some reason that makes "o...

Re: Classical Composers

Never heard of Brouwer, despite taking years of guitar. I wouldn't have guessed that classical guitar would get so close to "math rock" (a stupid name) -- but then, the division between the two isn't always clear-cut, especially when there are no fancy pop music tricks involved. (Then again, Carson ...

The AmEng dialects that have managed to avoid the NCVS and the cot-caught merger have systems that aren't too unstable.
