Languages in Civ IV

Post by ¡Papapishu! »

As you may or may not know, Civilization IV allows you to play as a number of different empires, the units of which speak an appropriate (if not entirely historically accurate) language when you click on them and give them orders. I thought it would be cool if we could see if anyone on the board knew these languages so that we can figure out what they're actually saying. They're mostly straight translations from English, sometimes resulting in incorrectities.

For those who don't have the game, the sound files can be found here. Think you can help fill in the gaps?

Just a couple things:

1) I copied the files over to http://www.thegreatsleep.com/civ/ for people who just want to listen to the files individually instead of downloading them all.

2) I don't think your choice of table formatting is going to be such a good idea when we start getting it filled in. I would recommend switching to a system where the English sentence is in bold and then each language is underneath it, so that it wont outgrow any barriers.

My understanding of spoken Quechua is pretty bad. Linguoboy gave me a book of Quechua stories, so maybe I'll try again later after reading it! Anyway, here's a transcription, at least, and the interpretations I could work out.

Order 0 - Unas hayki imataq
1 - Hakuchik - Let's go
2 - Chanamiki
3 - Ruwarusun - We will do it
4 - Ayiñá
5 - Raku hawiki
6 - Arí - Yes
7 - Richkaniñam - I am going + X
8 - Haku chir - Let's go + X
9 - Yupayku piram - You count X

Select 0 - Kayman hamuy
1 - Kamachuwanaykipa - something about orders
2 - Ima ruwayta iñaway - What task X
3 - Kamachikuykunatam suyani - I await your orders
4 - Raypa hariñam
5 - Imata ruwana - What task
6 - Allinchu - Please ('ready' is related)
7 - Kamachishayki- You command
8 - Imata munanki - What do you desire/need
9 - Yapanchaqayki

Additions to Spanish:

6. Tómelo como un hecho
11. Presentándome para misión
(I got stuck on the idea that the initial [pr] was [v] Listen for yourselves at SpainSelect-000.wav.
Edit: Also, looks like Kuvdamos has already solved this one, I just added the acute accent
10. Todos presentes, sanos y salvos

Just for fun: what I got from the Russian ones, without looking at a dictionary (only looking at the English). I'll try now to look up some words to see if I can fill the rest:

Just got done with Latin. There are two words, one of which is used frequently, which I have a hard time with. Select 000, 003, 004, 009 include [prajsti], which might be a shortened form of praestiti. Afficemus is distinctly heard in Select 001, which is not a Classical Latin verb form, but could be vulgar, which might explain the lost syllable in praestiti.

Latin

Order
000 ut illud velis
001 eamus
002 certe
003 incurrimus ab istud
004 nullum problema
005 labor factus
006 bene
007 in via sumus
008 agamus
009 fide de nobis

Select
000 [praj sti sumus], possibly praesti(ti) sumus.
001 stipendi *afficemus
002 impera
003 praestiti ad imperia
004 praestiti ad actionem
005 quid consilium est?
006 ita?
007 tua imperia?
008 quod exspectas?
009 omnes adsumus ad praesti(ti)

<strike>Btw, I'll finish up Greek. Or try to, at least.</strike> Nevermind, McNug. You handle it. I can't understand Modern Greek pronunciation.

The Chinese ones. First Traditional then Simplified, separated by a bar. When only one version is given that means the two are the same. Those are followed by pronunciation in pinyin.

Order:
如您所願。 | 如您所愿。 | Ru2 nin2 suo3 yuan4. (As you wish.)
出發! | 出发! | Chu1fa1! (Set off!)
當然。 | 当然。 | Dang1ran2. (Of course.)
我們在進行。 | 我们在进行。 | Wo3men zai4 jin4xing2. (We are proceeding.) -- this sounds really weird, as if spoken by anthropomorphic software or something..
沒問題。 | 没问题。 | Mei2 wen4ti2. (No problem.)
就算成了。 | Jiu4 suan4 cheng2 le. (Assuming that this is done.) -- a bit weird.
很好。 | Hen3 hao3. (Very good!)
動身! | 动身! | Dong4shen1! (Move!)
趕快行動! | 赶快行动! | Gan3kuai4 xing2dong4! (Move/act immediately!)
您等著瞧好了。 | 您等着瞧好了。 | Nin2 deng3 zhe qiao2 hao3 le. (You wait and see!) -- sounds weird too for someone taking an order.

Select:
報告執行任務。 | 报告执行任务。 | Bao4gao4 zhi2xing2 ren4wu. (Reporting the carrying out of duty.)
聽您吩咐。 | 听您吩咐。 | Ting1 nin2 fen1fu4. (We listen to your orders.)
告訴我做什麼。 | 告诉我做什么。 | Gao4su wo3 zuo4 shen2me. (Tell me what to do.)
等待您的命令。 | Deng3dai4 nin2 de ming4ling. (I an waiting for your orders.)
隨時準備行動。 | 随时准备行动。 | Sui2shi2 zhun3bei4 xing2dong4. (Ready anytime to move.)
計劃是什麼? | 计划是什么? | Ji4hua4 shi4 shen2me? (What's the plan) -- this idiom doesn't translate at all into Chinese.
是嗎? | 是吗? | Shi4 ma? (Really?)
您的命令? | Nin2 de ming4ling? (Your orders?) -- sounds like an incomplete sentence in Chinese.
您需要什麼? | 您需要什么? | Nin2 xu1yao4 shen2me? (What do you need?)
全部到齊報告。 | 全部到齐报告。 | Quan2bu4 dao4qi2 bao4gao4. (Reporting presence of all.)

Also Japanese select 5 should be:

計画は何ですか? (Keikaku wa nan desu ka?) - what's the plan?

Use the ones I have that don't have a question mark in brackets after them, as I'm fairly certain about those ones. You can choose can choose for the rest.

I thought it was ei, but I couldn't find keikaku in the dictionary.

Aztec:

quēn ticnequi "as you wish"

xiquīza "go out!"

zān quēma "only yes"

titequih āxcān "we cut/work now"

ahmo tlamantli "no thing"

xicmati nichīhualo "know that I am done" (ungrammatical)

zān cualli "just good"

ma tihuicān "let's go"

xinehnehemicān "walk! (pl.)"

ticateh īca tehhua "we are with you" (should be "motlān ticateh")

nicān nimotequiuh "here I am your work"

nitlayecotini ?

xinēchilhui īhuān nicchīhuāz "tell it to me and I will do it"

nicchīhua monāhuatil "I do your bidding"

titēyohka tēchihuāliz "? someones doing"

tlēn totekiliz
"what is our job"

quemma(n) "when?" (or "yes" but then thee geminate m is wrong)

monāhuatil? "you bidding?"

tlen timonequi "what you want yourself" (weird)

tipohualohuān
"we are counted" (I don't understand the -huān ending plural passive eding is normally just a glottal stop)

I really think this should be "как вы пожелаете" (kak vy poželaete), because that means the exact same thing as the English equivalent (ie. "as you wish"), whereas "как вы поживаете?" means "how are you?".
3 мы выступаем
I'm pretty sure I hear an /r/ in there, so I think this would be "мы приступаем" (my pristupaem). That would also perhaps me marginally more accurate in meaning; выступать means "to step forth", while приступать means "to start working".
4 не видеть(?) проблем
I can't hear what the second word actually is, but I'm quite certain it's not "видеть". First of all, I don't think видеть would make that much sense here (especially in its infinitive form), and more importantly, the word is clearly stressed on the second syllable, while "видеть" is stressed on the first.
5 считайтесь, что это уже сделан (?)
That should probably be "считайте" (sčitajte, "consider"), not "считаитесь" ("take into account"). And "сделан" should be in the neuter form "сделано" (sdelano), because it refers back to это (and also because the speaker clearly pronounces a schwa at the end).

You're right. I had written «как вы пожелайте» - I'll edit the post.

I'm sure there is an /r/ too.

Ah so last word is "сделано" - I'll edit that too.

If I have some more time, I'll listen to it again and look up more words in a dictionary.
