I really wish I could think of a good way to analyze this sort of thing, since I need a term paper topic for my intro to linguistics class. (yeah, intro. damn prerequisites) Is there any sort of measure for phonological divergence? One language could have a lot of sound changes that only affect really infrequent clusters or combinations, so obviously they can't just be counted.
