Not sure if this is the correct forum, but never mind.

Are there symbols or signs which can be guaranteed to signify the same thing to pretty much everybody, regardless of cultural context or upbringing? For example, would it be safe to assume that if somebody saw "→", he or she would know instinctively that something interesting or important was situated to the right?

I really really want to say "no", but I don't really know.

if it's a detailed-enough pictogram, probably.

I think a picture of a louse, of a naked man or of a naked woman, would mean the same thing to everyone. Lice, naked man, naked woman. Perhaps a fire might work as well.

I wouldn't recognize a picture of a louse, much less a symbolic one. I also have no idea what it would try to indicate to me.

I also have no idea what you think a picture of a naked man or a naked woman means. To me, it means a place where people are preferred to be nude, though it would depend on pose, posture, etc.

Other facets of this question have been kind of a big deal before, in regards to "how do we alert people not to go near nuclear waste facilities?". It's a hard problem.

Here's a 99pi article about it: https://99percentinvisible.org/episode/ ... and-years/

Here's a Wikipedia article discussing it a little, along with the current sign we hope is universal: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long-time ... g_messages

I understand what you mean about the louse. The symbol of a naked person is universally understood to signify a human. Further interpretations, like this is a nude area, might be understood by some people, but everyone would understand that this a human.

Even one thing can not be unequivocally interpreted as itself : symbols by their very nature designate something other than themselves, and they can only be conventional ...
I do not think any sign can be universal ...
the world itself needs language to be interpretable
