I'll probably be having influence from one of these:
Celtic langs
Polynesian langs
Uto-Aztec or Quechan
Combo of Arab and Romance(Like Sicilian)

I was thinking I'd try polysynthetic too, but maybe that's too much.

I'll use a language I already have but haven't done much with to save time. It's quite agglutinative and has a relatively simple syllable structure, should be interesting to see what a thousand years worth of sound changes to do it later on...
No one seems to have picture the bottom right continent... must be the one that everyone will fight over once colonization starts.

Re: Anyone want to Start on a Mass Project?
I guess I got Savannah.
So, here are some steps we should begin to do.
1. Research what kind of animals could develop in your biome, and then see how that affects your early people(hunter-gatherer, pastoralist)
2. Research human characteristics that help in your biome, as they will affect how your people look. Here's a link with some info
http://au.answers.yahoo.com/question/in ... 615AA65aEQ
3. Research the natural resources of your biome, to see what technology may develop, according to need(Just needs right now, not luxury or fun)
4. See how the environment(Flora and Fauna) will affect religion.
5. Generally see how the surroundings would affect your proto-people

Cool! And yes, the bottom right continent appears to be the one which we will fight over.
The island I chose is mainly subtropical. I'll start researching right now.

One question Ebba, how am I supposed to know what kind of savanna I am at? I am reading that there are several different types.

Are we going to come up with any sort of racial groupings of our conpeople as a group or are we going to see what happens after we each determine what our people should look like?

Re: Anyone want to Start on a Mass Project?
Ebba is Zukish for "the"...
Well, Wikipedia lists the following for savanna:
Tropical and subtropical savannas: This is probably what most of the areas labeled as savanna are.
Temperate savannas: This sounds more like parts of the areas labeled as steppe.
Mediterranean savannas: Same as above, but for areas labeled as Mediterranean.
Flooded savannas: Mostly in the areas labeled as savanna on the map, though limited to low lying areas than can actually get flooded.
Montane savannas: Probably in parts of the regions labeled as mountain.
The regions on the map are the ones used in The Planet Construction Kit.
And the marine climate has mild and rainy summer and relatively warm winters. Britain and Northern Europe, as well as the Pacific Northwest would be examples. Or see *Ceresz's link, which is it.
See here http://www.zompist.com/pckclimate.html for a map of Earth with the same climates listed. (Well, except for the sea ice)

Look at the link I posted, and see how your people's environment would cause them to develop. We'll end up with races that way.Azdusha wrote:Are we going to come up with any sort of racial groupings of our conpeople as a group or are we going to see what happens after we each determine what our people should look like?

So far I have decided that my con people will live mostly of fishing and hunting/gathering.
I don't want to dwell further into culture before I start fleshing out the language.

Re: Anyone want to Start on a Mass Project?
I think that my people would look somewhat Inuit and northern European looking, so; long black hair to keep the head warm (and also slightly frizzy), long nose with small nostrils to warm up cold air so it doesn't shock the lungs, double fold eyelids helps withstand the harsh climate while trapped in the taiga and tudra cold, blue eyes for a better reaction to red light so the eyes have better reactions to light during the cold winter nights, strong hands with long fingers for quicker warmth so they react quicker in the cold temperature, broad build (but not viking-muscley) so the blizzards don't pass through them, thin lips so there is a reduced risk of getting chaps or frostbite in the lips.
EDIT: Here is a bit more,
My people lived off fish, walrus meat or tallow, moose meat or tallow, and many blackberries, blueberries, and cranberries.
My people believe that each community is protected by a specific animal such as a polar bear or a walrus, maybe even a reindeer, or a seal. A village shaman would supposedly communicate with the apuşqaałțiwiina through song and dance.
They live in yurt-like structures called manykłaakena which are round with dome rooves. They are usually lined with woollen skins which raise the temperature from around 2°C to about 10°C-20°C. The structures are build with wood from the mountainous and taiga areas and are usually built like this:

I'm not sure how my people will look yet, but I think most people can survive in a climate where the temperature ranges from about 6°C to 26°C. But I guess I'll have to look up some major characteristics for people living/originating in/from places with this type of climate.

Re: Anyone want to Start on a Mass Project?
Assuming our people are all humans and they evolved in a savanna region like humans did on Earth, I have two possible regions of origin (the ovals) along with potential paths that they took to expand to other continents. (The dashed lines are ones I don't think are as likely, though might happen)
The main point is, depending on where the people evolved, those that have passed though the arctic region, even if they are not longer living there, are more likely to have retained some of the adaptations for arctic areas, even if they aren't as useful in their new environment, though this depends on how soon they arrived.
I think the first possibility is more likely, simply due to there being a much larger region of savanna where people could have evolved.

That's good because before I chose my current region I chose the one you had without realising that you had already chosen it So we can basically be somewhat one the same team, kinda.rickardspaghetti wrote:And considering the two maps Ebba presented now, our peoples are gonna be closely related too.
