I'm quite sure I've never heard anybody use "corn" to mean "primary crop of a place". And no, maize is the plant, the little yellow grains are sweetcorn, but corn is the grain that makes breakfast cereal.

Actually IMD (Appalachian English), it's all just "corn". "Maize" is never heard headr, except in the odd technical usage.
