Question about Almea

Post by con quesa »

Why didn't any civilization migrate up the coast to the north of Verduria? What prevented this from happening?

Well, first of all, there is a civilization along the tropical north coast, albeit a young one historically: Nan and the Little Kingdoms. Veduria and Kebri have traded with them, but not conquered them; one factor that seems to have kept the two civilizations somewhat apart is the difference in climate and the crops that they grow. Nan is primarily a coastal, boat-oriented society; their primary agricultural crops include rice, coffee, and sugarcane, which don't grow well in Verduria, but which the Verdurians purchase and import. The inland areas are dense jungle, which has been harder to clear and settle than, say the Green Plain of Eretald.

[EDIT: In addition, I note that the map of the southern hemisphere at the beginning and end of the Historical Atlas shows not only the mountains and rough lands to the west and northwest of Verduria and the Rau jungle beyond, but also a second mountain range further north that separates the Rau from Nan and the Little Kingdoms. Unsurprisingly, most large-scale travel and trade is therefore by ship along the coast.]

Further north lies the equatorial Zone of Fire, which humans and most others rarely cross, so that the two hemispheres remain largely separate. (One exception are the Bekkayin states, founded by Nanese explorers and settlers who made it across the Zone.)

You can take a look at the world map in the Verdurian Drilldown and the final maps in the Historical Atlas for more details.
