The Official "Let's Speak an Almean Lang" thread

Post by Neek »

So I figure it's about time we start having fun application with some of Mark's langs, and I was thinking we just up and start having convos in one of the Almean tongues. Since we do have two members already learning it, why not Ismahi?

Ozi, ce vił espregn Isma?n?

Te iz&ocirc ebez&ecirc m&ocircndn se suzizeze.

(To use an English idiom, and taking 'iz&ocirc' as an adverb describing where the work is happening.)

Se becomes S before a noun. Iru is the plural for Iri. Abelema is the present conditional for Abeln. :P

It's a pain in the neck when I want a common word, that's all.

Depends. In general useage, 'neon' is any one of a number of colored lights made by passing an electric spark through excitable gases. I believe the original gas used was neon, hence the name. Other gases make other colors, but are still often called neon. I don't want a specific color; I want the glow-in-the-dark broader sense of neon, like pointing to a road-worker's outfit and calling it 'neon orange'.

Be patient, Ghost. I must work my way through the grammar, until I know it all, before I shall attempt to construct sentences in Isma?n.

(Hmm...I'm tempted to propose that for this thread we use capitals in place of underlines.)

Zumo zi 'to learn' este ?nescrivec-z?. (C'e*, 'to cause onself to know + infintive.)

*how is pronounciation in this respect? I know that in the sound changes, c :> ? before front vowels, is this found in such contractions? Or do such contractions not naturally happen?

I am not even going to try putting this is Isma?n just at the moment.

When forming verbs from nouns or adjectives that don't end in any of the usual three letters, is there a favored ending? For example, if I wanted to affix ? to zis 'wicked' to form a verb meaning 'corrupt', should the final form be ?zisec, ?zisn, ?zisr, or something else entirely?

The sound changes are historical, so they wouldn't apply to a contraction.

As a rule of thumb: if the adjective ends in -i, use -r, otherwise -n. So in this case, ?zisn.
