Almean superstitions

Post by alassion »

I dunno if Zompist gets irritated by frequent idle questions about Almea, but I've been thinking about superstitions for my conworld, and it made me curious about such things on Almea.

So, what are some common superstitions in Almean countries? Are any days, activities, or numbers considered lucky or unlucky?

Since magic works on Almea, could there be any truth to these superstitions?

I'm mostly thinking about Verduria and related cultures, but I'd be just as happy to learn about any other place.
Thanks for reading.

I don't mind at all, but I don't always have good answers. :)

You might review the Almeopedia articles on magic and conspiracy theories. In my view superstition has two major sources: survivals from religions no longer believed (e.g. Endajue considers Meshaic practices superstition), and things repeated or believed because someone noticed a spurious pattern. For instance, it's considered bad luck to see icëlani. Perhaps this is just due to the unease of meeting something inhuman, perhaps it's due to some correlation between seeing one and bad things happening.

The premodern attitude about these things isn't to believe in them like a creed, but to figure, why not? I tried to show this in "The Rogues", where Fanao and Ngar use some charms to protect themselves from evil... who knows, it might help!

As you note, magic does work on Almea; where it does, that's not superstition.

Shm Revouse mentions that 4, 7, and 12 are sacred numbers, while 9 and 17 are sinister.

I had a question also and I thought putting it here rather than a new topic

Since magic works, and supernatural is true in Almea, are the 'supernatural' beings also actual? Let's pretend that (since some of us are Christians) Eledh is the Christian True God. But Perhaps also some of the gods of certain religions are actual deified beings? What about the Einelendaue?
