Beshbalik

Post by dhok »

I saw a country called "Beshbalik" on the map, north of the Barbarian Plain. At least, that's its name in Barakhinei. Is it stolen from Civ, as it's a Mongol city, or is it a coincidence?

It's a borrowing from the medieval Uighurs who had a capital there in the 800s. (Its ruins are known in Chinese as Beiting; it's located in Chinese territory now).

There are several Almean place names with terran equivalents:

ALMEA ----------- TERRA
Asucio ----------- Asunción, Paraguay
Bažra ------------ Basra, Iraq
Bozan ----------- ?possibly from the German version of Bolzano?
Ctesifon --------- capital of Sassanid Empire
Celebes --------- former name of Sulawesi
Como ------------ Lake Como (Italy)
Gurdago --------- Carthage (Carthago in Latin)
Van -------------- Lake Van (Turkey)

(Are there any more anybody can find? I'm sure there are some more cleverly disguised ones as well.) On the the old message board Mr Rosenfelder also lists "Sasti Kevir" as a borrowing, but I don't know where that's from...

Kolimantand (Skouras) and Kalimantan (Ereláe) - Kalimantan, part of Borneo
Flora - island in Indonesia
Zandorini - Santorini, island in Greece
Lake Lenan - Lac Leman, French name for Lake Geneva
Zanbalikh (Lernukh) - Khanbaliq, Mongol name for Beijing

Any others?

EDIT: Lake Shasti Kevir, Keshvare - Lake Shasta?

What's funny about this is that I always likened the flaids to Tolkien's hobbits (even though they are not at all like hobbits physically, but they seem to play a similar role in Almea) - and Flores, the Indonesian island, is the site where a hominid species was discovered that is nicknamed "hobbit" in the popular press!

Ah, Homo floriensis, the great mystery of hominid classification. Is it a small Homo sapiens or a different species? Who knows? :)

Concerning the flaids, Pickapo, Jeerio's hometown, is clearly a borrowing as well.

Also with the general link of hobbits, flaids, and Flora, what about Switzerland, Belshai, and L. Lenan (Leman)? - it seems unlikely to be just a coincidence...

Switzerland and Belshai share many things. However, an interesting difference between both is how Belshai was from the beginning a multicultural (multilingual and multireligious) State, while Switzerland had been German and Christian at the beginning).

Not to mention Belshai seems to be less conservative than its neighbors.
