Possible additions to Secret Dictionary of Verdurian

Re: Possible additions to Secret Dictionary of Verdurian
If there was any word for "teen", we might get it from "young individuals".Xeroderma Pigmentosum wrote:What are some words that could be in the Secret Dictionary of Verdurian bot aren't?

And for Buddhism, "Budhat". (like Irreanat and Eledhat)

teen, adolescent - You could use frälina for a teenage girl, or suleom for both.Xeroderma Pigmentosum wrote:What are some words that could be in the Secret Dictionary of Verdurian bot aren't?
Here are some words that could be added as loanwords:
headphones - acinošul, the tiny hearing device, or you could use a Swedish derivative, Hölur.
yogurt - Yogurt!
baseball - Baďpila or Snocupila (hit ball or club ball, as opposed to boďpila, kick-ball). The Swedish loan would be Bäsboll, possibly.
tennis - Gečëpila, net-ball. Same as baseball. Or, Tennis.
Buddhist - Buddilo (The geminate would be used; Buddhism'd definitely be Buddát).

Judging from Eledhat, I guess it would be Jippirat. Irreanat seems an exceptional case where the founder is used.Barvitex wrote:Since Verdurian uses -át to form names of religions from main god or founders, I am inclined to ask what is Verdurian for Jippirasti?
Jippirát or Baburát seem likely. Maybe Baburát is an abusive term like our Mohammedan for Muslim

In this thread, I coined two words:
Kešarastana, military term for quartermaster, the part of a military force that supports its soldiers with clothing, food, and supply. A quartermaster soldier is a kešarastcot.
Tombfel is a parachute, literally means a falling-sail. To parachute is tombfelec (to sail falling).

And would San Diego just be "San Diego" or "San Dëgo" or something?
This reflects the Verdurian attitude that disdains foreign alphabets. Thus, it's not at all intended as a transliteration, which wouldn't be very interesting anyway.
English vowels are a problem. I decided that the Verdurians would find it unacceptable to represent /{/ as <a> and would use <e> instead. On the other hand these don't make use of scholarly resources such as diacritics that aren't normally used in Verdurian. Verdurian does have î but its phonotactics normally prohibit it except in a final CV syllable, so I avoided it.
I decided not to translate "saint", on the assumption that the compilers didn't know English very well.

Oh no, how terrible. Reading that made me sick to my stomach. I feel ill now after reading this. I can only imagine how much worse Mark must be feeling.
BTW, I also read his January 17 entry. I'm glad he was able to spend some time with his parents. I'm going to start buying Mark Rosenfelder books.

Re: Possible additions to Secret Dictionary of Verdurian
I just had an idea today: How about a section of your Secret Dictionary of Verdurian for animal and plant species without an Almean equivalent? You already have "monkey" and "tomato" in your foods section; you could also add "pomegranate", "orchid" and similar Terran plant names; or, since Verduria doesn't have primates, "orangutan", "gorilla" and "chimpanzee". Or words like "zebra" and "kangaroo" from the list above. It would also be possible to fork off Clothes, Music and Sports from the Lifestyle section as these categories grow.

Well, it's been one year now. A good time to dust off the list and possibly the "numbers in 5,020 languages" page.On Monday, January 21, 2013:

And of course I recognize that pic! Never would have guessed it was Zomp's dad.
(Tie in to:
! Yep, I've got this book/)I'm going to start buying Mark Rosenfelder books.

Re: Possible additions to Secret Dictionary of Verdurian
It may come off as...two-faced, but that's not how I wanted it to. My Asperger's makes it hard for me to tell how other people will react to the things I say. (Yes, we girls can have Asperger's too, although it's only about a quarter or a fifth as common as boys with Asperger's.) And yes, I really am "totally sorry" Mark's mom died, which is why I bought The Conlanger's Lexipedia. After all, if someone who was close to me was in the throes of death, I'd want the financial security to be able to spend my last moments with them.Civil War Bugle wrote:"Hey man, I'm totally sorry your mom died, but now go do some random thing I want you to do."

And I was starting to get impatient for an update. When I first made that list of "Secret Dictionary" additions, it was August 2008. Now it's April 2014. That's long enough a time to bring up the new words again, isn't it?
And I also want to hear from those of you who *aren't* Zompist on this topic. Anyone going to say, "We SO need a word for 'focaccia' on the Food part of the Secret Dictionary!"? Or whatever?
