Zomp says that Almea is at about 1750 in Earth terms. What, then, is the state of medicine/public health? If I went into the apartment of a city dweller and asked for a drink of water, would I get pure aqueduct water or muddy, opaque water with the potential to give me cholera? Or, if I had some unknown disease, would I be sent home with the instruction to rest and drink fluids or be bled to death?
Note the following from the Visitor's Guide:
Verdurians know abstractly that clean water is better— when aqueducts are built, the rich make sure they come first to their neighborhoods. But they won't blink an eye at conditions that would repulse an American visitor. Note however that they already have immunities to most of of the diseases that may be present.
It's generally safer, in a premodern city, to ask for alcoholic drinks rather than water. (Or even tea and coffee, since the water will be boiled.)Virtual Verduria wrote:If you're wounded or sick, what you want is a lekaro, a physician. If what you need is surgery, expect rough but effective treatment, with alcohol or hallucinogens as anaesthetic. If you have something else, expect painful, expensive, and ineffectual treatment. Just wait out the illness, if you can-- your chances are better. See a zeřašom (herbalist) for pain relief and some chance of a working folk remedy. If you get worse, try to get home, or at least find a good undertaker, rather than put yourself under the care of a lekaro.
If an iliu offers to treat you, however, accept without hesitation.
