Tolkien and verdurian

Questions or discussions about Almea or Verduria-- also the Incatena. Also good for postings in Almean languages.

Tolkien and verdurian

Post by Izambri »

Has anybody translated into verdurian the Ring Poem (The Lord of the Rings)??? I'm very interested in the different translations of this poem.

I don't think so. I thought someone translated it into Elkar?l, but I can't find it with a quick search.

Terrible Flaidish

Post by So Haleza Grise »

I decided to have a crack at it in Flaidish, although I'm pretty sure the version I've come up with is terrible.

Fell lurmot lunechen 7oz naupeler lollyd 7egg,
Sam lurmot yetyau sooreler sittyd cadum teerer.
7ecker lurmot yetyau luuker neck mipse,
Yoven 7y lurmot 7ok feck gaazel sittyd feck mech.
Sittyd feck Mordorys.

7y lurmo neck dret neyau befelno,
7y lurmo neck neyau zitno,
7y lurmo neck sit neyau vedno,
Yoven sittyd feckmot neyau dorfenchno.
Sittyd feck mech Mordorys.

Notes:

There wasn't a term for "ring", so I borrowed lunese from Ismain.

I wasn't sure what classifier to use with ring, either, despite my feeling
that it was clearly a mass noun. I eventually settled on lurmo.

I used ilii and elcari in place of elves and dwarves.

In the first sentence, I omitted the pronoun complex, but then I added it in the later ones while dropping the verb. Not sure if that's legal.

"halls of stone" --> "mountain cities".

"upon his dark throne" --> "in his dark land".

For the pronoun complex in "rule them all", I used yau rather than yet, since I was still talking about rings (one ring out of all the rings).

I coined dretbefel to mean "rule over".

I put the second half--the "one ring to rule them all..." part--into Ismain a while back; check the "Official Learn to Speak an Almean Language" thread.

Someone actually translated that poem into my conlang for me; it was a pretty good attempt, considering how little I had posted at the time. I was so flattered: my first fan-translation! And the rhythm worked out surprisingly well.

I'd like to try Cadhinor but I don't have time tonight.
