I assume the photograph on the cover gives a strong indication that the Ilii had space travel at some point.

Could be!

FWIW the colors in that image are sampled from NASA's cloudless photo maps of Earth. (I created the flat map, then textured a sphere with it in a 3-D modelling program.)

My grandpa had an awesome book of early space photographs of earth - I thought it had a certain similarity.
