I'm a bit curious about (external) Incatena history

I've been wondering a bit about the history of the Incatena - that is, not the in-universe history, which I can always read up about on the website, but the history of the Incatena idea inside your head. Apparently you've been working on the timeline for it since at least the 1980s - so how did it change over time? And how did you come up with it in the first place?
One thing I like about the Incatena is that it was the first SF scenario I discovered that had interstellar exploration and politics combined with leaving relativity intact. How did you get that idea?
(Note to self: I've just learned that my English-language spellcheck doesn't know the word "timeline". Or, for that matter, the word "spellcheck". Whose idea was that?)
