Isma?n phonology

Post by Cor »

Wow, this is the first post I've made in Almea...it feels good. Down to business: In Isma?n, as you probably know, exists a set of alveolo-palatal fricatives. Is that some sort of double articulation of [s] and [x]?

No, it's a single articulation. It's like a palatal fricative except the tongue forms a longer channel for the air, all the way from the palate to the alveolar right. To me it sounds like a hollower, tinnier [S]; if you're sick of stupid impressionistic suggestions like that, there are sound files of it in Polish and Mandarin.
