Zomp,
I was curious to know what are some really bizarre and odd organisms living on Almea? Other than the sentient beings of course. I was just wondering about what sort of oddities you would have.

Not so:
The descent of les?asi wrote:There are two main branches of lutinids, the shipomi and the ilii. The former exist in many species, and have only about the intelligence of monkeys.

Yeah, that's right. Supposedly they had numerous legs, though, and could run incredibly fast.

Hmm, the only ones I can think of offhand are the airswallows described in the epic of the Sojourner. You can read about them in the Secret History-- it's easiest to go to the end of the page and scroll up.

To save some searching, here's what I said about dragons on the old board:

Dragon tales originate with the southern Horselords, who like to frighten children with tales of huge, many-legged reptiles which hunt horses (and their riders), riding them down on the vast plains. (There's a kingdom, Dracn?e = 'dragon-land', on the edge of the plains; evidently named because it seemed like a good place to find dragons.)

The Cadhinorians took up and elaborated these stories, making the dragons malignant creatures of Shkagon, allies of the ktuvoki, and giving them an interest not only in chasing horsemen but in breaking into castles to eat the livestock and humans within. (Almean dragons can't fly, but on their many legs they can run frighteningly fast.)

The horselords were no doubt inspired by the large lizards found on the Barbarian Plain. It's not hard to find some the size of a large dog, though they go after much smaller prey than horses. No one really knows how big these lizards can grow, however...

so...are dragons real creatures in Almea, or just stories the Horselords made up or became exaggerated tales of these large lizards on the Barbarian Plane?

The last paragraph of Mark's post gives a clear "maybe" as an answer to that question- from what I know about Mark, he seems to like retaining some mystery about some things sometimes.

And you've been on these boards for quite a while, eh, Irgend?

Hey, that has nothing to do with the atmosphere of conworlds!
