Anyone out there willing to transliterate "Langmaker" into Verdurian, Elkaril and Yingzi? I rotate such transliterations on the Langmaker.com home page and would like to give more prominence to these three langs.

The images should be GIF, JPEG or PNG and no wider than 200 pixels.

Give me a week and I could try something for Verdurian and Elkar?l.
I'll try Yingzi as well but I don't know if the script is complete enough...

Not to step on Shm Churmey, but my resources for this are probably better.

Here's the transliteration into Verdurian, first in printed letters, then in calligraphy:

And in Elkar?l:

That's supremely pretty. I like it, Zomp.

Thanks, Zomp, and thanks, Shm Churmey, for the offer.

Here's Elkar?l's neography profile. And Verdurian's. It's going to be fun to watch these come up on the home page.

And think of Yingzi some time. You already have a grapheme for "lang" -- just need one for "maker"!

I've noticed that Verdurian has already been entered into the ConScript Unicode Registry, but Elkar?l hasn't. A Unicode Elkar?l font would be ?berawesome—having the ability to generate those faces on-the-fly would be undeniably nifty.

It wasn't Zomp that put it in, it was some Verdurian enthusiasts quite a few years back, while still in the Zompist.com/board phase.

To be precise, the CSUR people contacted me, and I worked with them to give them the information and fonts they wanted.

At one point I saw a bulletin board entry about Elkar?l being included, and it was suggested that they wouldn't do it without having fonts available. I'm sure this could be done, but it's not a high priority.

Ged, I haven't forgotten the Yingzi. It needs a little research, since I try to re-use radicals and phonetics from Chinese.

You're thinking of this post to Qalam in Dec 2003, I believe.
5. What does that "non-proposal" mean anyway?

I called this a "non-proposal" because I know that John Cowan and Michael
Everson will ask me: "Will you provide a Elkar?l font for us to publish
your proposal on the CSUR website?", and I will reply: "Nope, gentlemen! I
won't spend some month of my life trying to produce the most complex
OpenType font ever attempted just to read my name on the CSUR website...",
and they will say: "Good. Then the proposal is refused."
I don't think it's actually possible to make complex script fonts in the Private Use Area using OpenType. It probably is possible with SIL's Graphite. I've idly considered the possibility of making a font for the CSUR definition of Engsvany?li once Graphite support is integrated into Pango (allowing me to use it in Linux) - if I ever get around to it, maybe I'll try my hand at an Elkaril font too.

I am now fully convinced that John Cowan is God, as he seems to be omnipresent.

You wouldn't need a complete font, would you? Just representative glyphs for each component character—all of which are on the Elkar?l writing page.

So, Zomp, not to tread on your feet or anything, but I was thinking this over today and I came up with an idea: phonetic lake, since it's a natural phenomenon, radical man. Rhymes with lake, related to a man, clearly it must be make.

For -er, use per with a dot, similar to is with a dot for final -s.

I am not even going to attempt ASCII art for this, and I don't have anywhere I can store images (or even a decent paint program), so I'm going to leave this to y'alls imagination. My lake ended up looking a lot like a potato anyway, so I'm probably better off...

EDIT: Duh, I should make clear that this is for the writing of "LangMaker" in yingzi. Phonetic gang, radical speech; p lake, r man; p per with a dot.

I prefer phonetics that are also phonetics in Chinese; 'lake' is not. But then the alternatives may not be, either. It's certainly the most picturable of the alternatives I can think of.

I'd make it the hand radical.

I did some poking in an online Chinese dictionary, and couldn't find anything that rhymed with "lake" that was a phonetic all by itself. But as I'm not a Chinese scholar by any means, I may have missed something. :) It's just occurred to me that I went about it wrong-way-round, so I'm going to go check again and see if I come up with something better.
I'd make it the hand radical.
Good point.

Aha!

Phonetic snake, radical either hand or (my preference, having looked over the yingzi page again) work. That way, you can use hand for "shake".

OK, here it is:

Image

http://www.zompist.com/Langmakerzi.png
Breakdown:

lang = radical speech phonetic gang
make = radical work phonetic drake
-er = radical work phonetic per

Neon, I adopted your radical suggestion for 'make'. 'Snake' is very good, but doesn't fit the rules-- it should start with a voiced consonant. 'Drake' not only matches Chinese l?ng but has a nice antiquity to it. I also took your suggestion to use phonetic 'per', but the dot is not very Chinese-like; I gave it the same radical.

Oh, phooey--I had a feeling there was something I was forgetting. This is what comes of not checking the uncommon consonant clusters on your way through the alphabet. ('bake', 'cake', no, 'dake' doesn't mean anything, 'fake', 'flake'... :)
I also took your suggestion to use phonetic 'per', but the dot is not very Chinese-like; I gave it the same radical.
OK; I was using a dot by analogy with the "is with a dot for final -s" on the yingzi page, but you know the rules better than I do. :)

Very Pretty! I love the cursive form of the Vedurian script! Could you provide more samples?
