Wordbook
Wordbook
If you've been following the Deevie notes thread, then you'll know that I've been cataloging my lexicon in what I call the Deevie wordbook. Well, in addition to making Wordbook the home for Deevie's lexicon, I've also written it to be flexible and generic, so that others can use it if they'd like, and I've set it up so that users can get started without any technical expertise. Through my personal use I've tested it out through about 950 entries now, and I'd like to move on to beta testing with a few people, so if you're interested let me know! You'll need a gmail address, plenty of words, and not much else.
Thanks!
Thanks!
Re: Wordbook
This seems very interesting... I'd like to try this.
Re: Wordbook
Great! PM me the gmail address you would like to use and I'll set it up so that you can add wordbooks.
Re: Wordbook
That looks nice. Is there a way to make at least one search field visible at all times? I thought it was a little counter-intuitive to have to add it, first.
How easy is it to link to a different entry? I organize my current dictionary by roots, whenever possible, so easy access to related words is very important for me. [edit] Oh, it looks like you can click every word. That's even better.
I'd like to give it a try (though I'm not sure if I'm patient enough to convert 1500 entries to a new format
). My email address is njneuteboom followed by the usual GMail punto com. (<- my best attempt at fooling spam bots)

Re: Wordbook
My Gmail is kath.aveara plus the gmail.com extension. This sounds like fun, and if I can access this from College...
Re: Wordbook
I have three gmails. The one I'd like to use is tarannar with the gmail.com extension.
Re: Wordbook
Sorry for the delay guys. I had to shore up a few aspects of creating new wordbooks than I had overlooked, but I should have it ready for testing by tomorrow.
Re: Wordbook
Okay, I think we're ready to go. Those who have signed up can log in to their accounts and have at it. I haven't made any documentation yet, and though much of the functionality is self explanatory, feel free to post here if you have any questions. I'll also probably make a usage video and post it to YouTube or something, but that's for later.
One quick note: the identifier is what determines the short url to your wordbook, e.g. connotationswordbook.appspot.com/MyWordbookIdentifier. It can contain only the letters A-Z or the digits 0-9, must start with a letter, is not case sensitive, and must be unique. If any of these conditions fail then you'll see a failure icon, indicating, for example, that your choice is already taken. The name, on the other hand, is pretty much a free unicode string and is displayed at the top of all wordbook pages.
Have fun!

Re: Wordbook
How does one delete a wordbook? I accidentally made one, and I want to get rid of it.
Re: Wordbook
I haven't implemented proper deletion yet. For now, I've added a visibility field which will hide a wordbook from your wordbooks list, but the book will still be accessible through its url.
Re: Wordbook
It's really nice and flexible, but at times it's really slow. A little too slow for 1500 entries, their pronunciation, definition, class, etc...
I can't blame you for that, though (I think?)

Re: Wordbook
Plus mine isn't displaying everything properly. There are maybe 4 entries which aren't displaying the last lines of the examples, even through I've typed them in.

Re: Wordbook
I'd like to have access to this as well! I've sent you a pm with my gmail address.

This, at least, should be fixed. Kinda.KathAveara wrote:Plus mine isn't displaying everything properly. There are maybe 4 entries which aren't displaying the last lines of the examples, even through I've typed them in.
I've made some recent updates to improve stability, particularly addressing the issues of some records not being saved as Kath mentioned. However, I'm still getting some intermittent errors when editing new entries. If you guys experience errors while editing, let me know since it will helpful in pinpointing the problem (I can look at the logs for low level stuff but higher level reproducibility is also important, especially since I'm pretty sure that what the logs are showing is a symptom rather than the underlying cause).
Also, ronin, you've been added. Thanks for trying it out!

Re: Wordbook
I did manage to bug out an entire wordbook by adding a new entry, then refreshing whilst trying to add a new category to that entry. It caused the entry to 'eat up' all the other entries, merging them into a super-entry. I also cannot edit it to fix it.

Re: Wordbook
I've added an entry but the gloss is not showing up when I search; only the word and pronunciation are.

Re: Wordbook
Glosses are kind of just hanging around at the moment. I put them in there because I thought I might want to implement automatic glossing of example sentences sometime in the future, but for now there main use is to make it easier to search for function words like "of" that show up in every second definition.
To build your entry, add a type, say "verb", and then add a definition to that type and put "to be" there. Also, I would recommend putting ’ǝsqún "to see" in a morpheme under the etymology, so that you can search for it by morpheme name. I changed your first entry so you can see these suggestions.
Ask me if you have any more questions!

Re: Wordbook
It's done it again, cos it decided to break when I tried to add an etymology. Basicly, a little red thing popped up, and I couldn't add anything more to the entry,KathAveara wrote:I did manage to bug out an entire wordbook by adding a new entry, then refreshing whilst trying to add a new category to that entry.
