Am I really bad at hearing uvulars or do most of the actors--with the possible exceptions of Avery Brooks and J.G. Hertzler--pronounce /q/ as [k]?

What ship would bear me ever back across so wide a Sea?”

I don't think it's you. Jonathan Frakes once pronounced nuqneH? qaleghnIS! (/nuqˈnɛx qɑˈlɛɣnɪʂ/) as [nukneɪ kaleɪnɪs] (can't remember how he stressed it). In the TV shows, Klingon usually just gets mangled in general—Michael Dorn pronounced tlhIngan jIH (/t͜ɬɪˈŋɑn d͜ʒɪx/) as [ˈklɪŋgɑn d͜ʒi]. I don't think we can fault the actors too much, though; they probably didn't all know the intricacies of IPA and Klingon pronunciation.

I wasn't really trying to cast blame. I haven't had extreme exposure to uvulars so I really was trying to find out if I was mishearing. I think Sisko and Martok do, at least sometimes, get the uvular plosives right, at least.

To be honest, I don't mind the inaccurate pronunciation, the actors seem to pronounce things with just enough regularity that you can see sound correspondences between orthography and pronunciation, so you can somewhat get a good feel for what they are saying. (it's all in scripts online anyway).

But I'm wondering if the "Klingon" from Star Trek Into Darkness was real Klingon, or something created by JJ Abrams and co.?

Apparently it was actually Klingon. Wikipedia and the Star Trek wiki Memory Alpha have Star Trek: Into Darkness as one of seven films in which Klingon was used (the other being Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, Star Trek: Insurrection and a deleted scene from Star Trek)
You can tell the same lie a thousand times,
But it never gets any more true,
So close your eyes once more and once more believe
That they all still believe in you.
Just one time.

Yeah, I found a script and translation of the Klingon dialogue, and forgot to come update my post. Thanks :)

Fun fact: If I understand my Klingon correctly, Uhura mentions her Klingon skills are rusty, then goes on to use incorrect verbal prefixes during her talk with the Klingons.

Apparently there are some not so Okrandian things happening in STXII.
