Have I mentioned recently that I hate Apple products? When I unplug something from the headphone jack (lit. "unhole the speaker penis") on this Mac, it changes the volume -- and when I plug something in, it takes a few seconds to notice and reroute the sound.

As Sevly said, that's a feature. It's similar to how unplugging a laptop often decreases the screen's brightness (unless you changed your settings); it's to help save battery power.
and when I plug something in, it takes a few seconds to notice and reroute the sound.

How old is the system? I've noticed that older electronic devices tend to take longer to respond to things getting plugged into them. My three-year-old phone takes about five seconds to realize I plugged it in.

No, but there's a Unciode left/right override character, which screws up everything.

I returned home from France yesterday. It was very hot there. There was a wedding, which was nice. Now I'm back at work again.
