Re: Uyendur alphabet

After a lot of experimentation, rejection, revision, and a whole lot of scrap paper, I've finally come up with a cursive script for this alphabet. As I said, although it was inevitable that it would look like a Middle Eastern script, I specifically avoided looking at any ancient Middle Eastern scripts while designing this to avoid any blatant borrowing.

This sample is handwritten on paper. Making a font of this won't be easy.

It reminds me of my roman handwriting!

No, seriously, it's great, it looks very naturalistic.

Thanks for your comments, I appreciate the support. Here's another chart that clarifies the basic letter forms (though there are ligatures and so forth). Still not so sure I like the form of <ĕ>. It's kind of awkward to write.

Now I have to figure out how these scripts coexist.

ĕ looks just fine... you could reverse it, as well. have it be an inverted descending z or something.

It looks fine to me, but maybe too similar to m (on the original script, I think).

So, maybe a timeline like this?

It was done in paint, so it's kind of crappy.

The handwriting is beautiful

I can imagine it in some big, illuminated tome with lots of pictures and ink splots and descriptions of herbs

Thanks, this is kind of what I was thinking. I was already going to call the cursive script "merchant's hand".

GrinningManiac, thanks. The Uyendur language itself is still in its infancy though, so I won't be writing any tomes just yet.

Uyendur is my attempt to make a language filled with things I have avoided using in other languages I've made, like not particularly intuitive inflections, gender, definite article (suffixes). It's not a groundbreaking language for anyone on this board, but for me it is a bunch of stuff I haven't really done before, so it's kind of interesting.

I'm reviving this three-year-old thread to say that this font is actually happening now that I have the knowledge and resources to do it.

The font makes use of OpenType features, so that all the ligatures are done entirely automatically. The font is not totally finished and it's still somewhat buggy, but it's coming along nicely overall!

I'm using my original handwritten samples as a base, so it bears a fairly close resemblance to my sample. In fact, many of the font's glyph shapes were taken directly from this sample.

Wow! Very impressive. As others said before, it's very naturalistic looking - I can imagine people actually using it (some conscripts just don't have that plausible usable feel to them). The cursive version reminds me of da Vinci's mirror handwriting more than anything middle eastern (well, only at first glance. It looks quite unique when you actually pay attention to it).

I'm sad I didn't see this thread back in 2012, but it's looking amazing! I really love the aesthetic.
