Other conlangs?

Substantial postings about constructed languages and constructed worlds in general. Good place to mention your own or evaluate someone else's. Put quick questions in C&C Quickies instead.

This thread is called "Other conlangs?", so we're clearly in the context of conlangs.
And that's supposed to mean what? Jacqui gave her opinion on someone else's conlang.

"Dude: Conlang L is damnably ugly.
You: Well, there's others that are more ugly, so Conlang L isn't all that bad."

Can you not fathom the retardation of that argument?
Also, I didn't say it was "very useful", I contested the notion that it was
of little use
.
I'm going to ask if you're a native English speaker or just an aspie.
As for the second, it lends credence to my point because whether or not you hear a language in a café everyday is no indication of its usefulness.
Yeah, and it looks like your point was actually "Hey, it's not so rare because you can sometimes sorta hear it every once in a while in a cafe".

Herp derp, it's still pretty fuckin useless so you can stuff it.

Yeah, I probably will just stuff it. The discussion has gone on long enough. Calling time on it now would probably be a good idea.

Way to take a dump on my thread, MrKrov. Find a bathroom next time ;)

I mean, we're on a CONLANG board. Who cares about usefulness? I'm learning a language with a speaker population of one: me. What we do is about as useful as stamp collecting.

The cool thing about Esperanto compared to other conlangs at least is I can find lots of people to practice with online and plenty of books and literature written by other people to read. If I want to read something in Sjal, I have to write it myself first. And I'll never be able to converse with someone else in it :P

Another thing I like about Esperanto is there's almost always a way to say something. If you want to talk about mycology or music theory or seafood recipes, there's the vocabulary for it by now in Esperanto. The problem I have with some conlangs like Quenya and Na'vi is there are gaps for relatively basic words. Quenya's situation is pretty much what it is, but I'm really curious to see how Na'vi grows. The creator has started a blog :)

Any other conlang gems out there? I always like finding new ones.

I really like Sjal. I'm not saying that because you started the thread. Siwa is also awesome. I haven't looked much into it, but Old Albic seems very nice from what I've seen. Qatama is very cool, as is Proto-Drem. Soaps' conlangs have a certain appeal about them, they all seem to share a certain "flavor" or something. I also like Vabungula. It may not be as fancy as many conlangs, but it is cool that it is used so much by its designer, and it got me into conlanging.

I like Toki Pona - it's cute. It's also surprising how much can be communicated in it with heavy use of context, compounding, and foreign loanwords. It's useless for specialized discourse on anything, including Stone Age topics like distinguishing plants and animals, but I believe being usable for anything other than socializing and assisting visual learning was not part of the creator's intentions.

I also like Quenya, although I'm having to relearn the language every few years - I wasn't expecting the past tense to be formed differently for transitive and intransitive verbs!

I'd like to take this time to be informative about the nature of the thread that was already shat on: it was already shat on and not shat on alone. I just ended the shatty nature of the shatting.

That tends to happen when you relex everything.

Okay, you've said your piece on Esperanto. Can we move on now? I specifically asked for this not to become a flame war about Esperanto.

Conlang Entropy - all conlang discussions will eventually become Esperanto flamewars.

Interesting - I love them

Sindarin I love the flavour of the language, as I like Celtic languages. Interested in the plural patterns and consonant mutations, which inspired me the noun flexion in Elnian.
Adûnaic/Westron Love the orthography and the phonology.
Khuzdul Same as above.
My conlangs Obviously. If I don't love them, what I'm doing?

Not so interesting

Quenya Some points of interest, specially the differences from Sindarin. Too regular, simple phonology.
Talossan Liked it when it resembled a Romance language. Not so happy with it now.

I hate them - Don't deserve my time

Esperanto In my humbly opinion, a crime against good taste.
Paolini's crime What can I say...

Here is the webpage. It started off as any old kids conlang, I guess you could say, but he developed it quite a bit and is now an adult.

Consider "conlang" in its widest possible meaning. But, yeah, we agree. :P

Sjal, I appreciate your kindness. Take a look starting from http://linguifex.com/wiki/Dama_Diwan and I wish I have your opinion in the group https://www.facebook.com/groups/omado.sosti.matiko (because I rarely visit the zompist bboard).

I am a fan of invented languages in general, rather than a language creator. I have never gotten beyond an incomplete sketch.
Do you have any favorites? Why? Any you despise? :)
My tastes are fairly mainstream, so I tend to enjoy most of the "popular" languages like Esperanto, Lojban, Toki Pona, and Ithkuil. (The former two I am currently learning.)

I love the concept and community behind Esperanto. It has a pleasant, turn of the century pan-European feeling that brings nostalgia for a time when serious-minded people were still allowed to be idealists. I am learning it because I think a consciously-chosen international language represents a moral victory over imperialistically-imposed lingua anglicae.

Lojban's main attraction is its learning tools like parsers and translators, so new students can check their sentences and make funny neologisms. The main drawback is not its rigid nature or even its sound, but rather the constant tinkering and politicking of its community. (One assumes that Klingon would have the same problem.)

There are none that I particularly despise, but most naturalistic a posteriori languages bore me so I tend to overlook them.

So Dama decides to necro a six-yo thread, there's one reply (to the six-yo posts), and Nort writes something unintelligble (but no doubt endearing). So glad there's a ZBB to keep me occupied... :)
