The Ahu live in a tropical climate, and even the polar regions of their planet have a subtropical climate, so their only experience of snow is in the mountains and thus, mostly, viewed at a distance.
alaiu - snow in the air, falling snow (possibly related to lal "rain" and aigu "white")

Re: Lexicon Building
Poswa wuva, Pabappa wibaba, Lupisam wine all mean "ice sculpture" and could be used alone or with a word for statue to designate a scuplture of a person made out of snow. The Poswa word is irregular and at first I thought I made a mistake in my dictionary, but now that I think about it it looks like they just changed the first element from wi "ice" to wu, "made of ice".
All of these words ignore the fact that, both here and on Tebbala, snowmen are generally made out of fresh snow rather than hard, compacted ice. This is really just a matter of convenience, since the word for snow at the time that the "ice sculpture" compound was coined was two syllables longer. The speakers of the present day languages see the words as a single morpheme because neither of the elements is transparent anymore.
I could go on but I'd be making it up as I go.
