This is an example of my new English-based conlang. It's descended from Old English.

You don't need passports within the EU or various non-EU countries that have signed treaties to such effect. Some countries do require one, though, but those are mostly places you don't usually go to anyway (e.g. Albania).

and the UK/Ireland. (like, you'll never not be let in with an EU passport but we're not in the Schengen area, it's ridiculous. we have to show passports going the other way too. on the plus side, it means basically all british people have a passport to use as ID)

Well, I should have specified I've so far basically only been to Schengen countries, with the exception of Yugoslavia (for which reason I guess I still have a children's passport from the late 80s) and a few day trips to and transits through Switzerland, which only joined the Schengen treaty a few years ago and which I thus technically entered illegally on several occasions, I guess, unless they have special treaties with Germany.

Switzerland has had a special treaty relationship with the EU since 2002, whereby Swiss citizens, for many purposes of application of EU/EEA law, are treated as EU/EEA citizens and vice-versa. This includes freedom of movement. (Notably, Switzerland fully entered the Schengen Area in 2009.) Pretty much, countries EU/EEA/Swiss citizens can visit just with valid national ID cards include, in addition to the EU, EEA, and Switzerland, Andorra, the Vatican, Croatia, Serbia (I think) and Turkey (for certain visa-exempt foreigners, like Germans, Frenchmen, and Italians).
