World Building/Non-linguistic Resources

Substantial postings about constructed languages and constructed worlds in general. Good place to mention your own or evaluate someone else's. Put quick questions in C&C Quickies instead.

I'm quite fond of Richard Cowen's Essays on Geology, History, and People.

As the title might suggestion, it's a good overview of the history of people's interactions with stone and metal, covering technological development, precious metal economies, natural disasters, etc.

Here is a cool paper I found entitled "The Galactic Habitable Zone and the Age Distribution of Complex Life in the Milky Way" a short paper with lots of helpful graphs and formulas.

Looks like the conworlds.info domain has taken a turn for the dead. Fortunately, the conworlds bbs can still be reached at http://206.214.216.61/cwbb/index.php?si ... 9436f61de8.

It's ugly, but it works. Logging in is PITA!

It's always a bit jarring because they're not perfect homophones – [ni?kwIki] versus [ni:k_hWIki], or something along those lines.

Looks like Geoff Eddy(bricka)'s Creating an Earthlike Planet and Climate Cookbook pages have gone wherever webpages go when they lose hosting. Has Daistallia gotten the go ahead from bricka to host the pages? Failing that, I might PM him myself about hosting his pages on my WordPress site. I think I managed to pagesuck most of it onto my drive here.

They're still hosted somewhere (I think Neek made a copy), but yes, my university hosting has finally died. :(

If anyone would like the Unicode copies of the pages, let me know. :)

I can't find it on Knee Quickie.

I have, as I think I mentioned earlier, the Climate Cookbook and Creating an Earthlike Planet pages. I don't have his higher level, more personal pages. I thought I remembered there being some linguistic stuff there too.

My conlang stuff runs mostly limited toward simple naming languages and slightly less simple naming languages. Occasionally, I can't resist naming something, "The Principal River that runs through the Land of the People that Defeated the King of the City of Camps," but my conlinguistic incompetence keeps that temptation in check. Fortunately...

Danke schoen, you rock!

The jc.tech one looks to be the best so far. All the images are there and the internal links have been updated to avoid dead links.

Oh well. I won't bother mirroring this on my wordpress page then.

The eventual real URL will be
http://conworlds.org/cwbb.
At the moment that might be even uglier, because the PITA seems to last past log in (maybe I'm wrong?).

Here's a link to a digital orrery,

http://dd.dynamicdiagrams.com/wp-conten ... y_2006.swf

It's a beautiful, moving map of the solar system. It has a nifty feature in that you can switch it from a Copernican view to a Tychonian view, where the Earth is at the center of the solar system and the sun and planets move around the Earth in epicycles. (Could be handy if your world has non-Newtonian physics) You can select the date, control the speed, even rewind the planets.
