World Building/Non-linguistic Resources

Substantial postings about constructed languages and constructed worlds in general. Good place to mention your own or evaluate someone else's. Put quick questions in C&C Quickies instead.

Don't know if has been posted here:

Biological factors in the evolution of intelligence
Our bodies are made of elements fused inside supernovas. Our minds are equally connected to the universe. This site focuses on how biology influences the evolution of intelligence, and notes the boundary conditions given by astronomy and chemistry. Science fiction is used to provoke thought on the nature and limits of the evolution of intelligence.

Any chance this thread could be stickied or something so that we don't have to dig through the archives every time we want to reference it?

Here is a site that you can use to calculate escape velocity for a given planet: http://www.calctool.org/CALC/phys/astro ... e_velocity

I found it while perusing Wikipedia one day and it has been useful for the creation of my own conworld.

Then there is this: http://janus.astro.umd.edu/orbits/ssbuild.html

Not sure if it has been brought up yet, but if it hasn't then it should. I found it very useful as a first step in planning my planet's solar system. It is only for a general idea - you can tweak or fine-tune the stats it gives you later.

I hate to bump pointlessly, but I consider Bricka's pages valuable and as they tend to get abandoned like sad little orphans from foster home to foster home...

Here is the latest foster home I found them at

http://thunder.smokeynet.org/bricka/

Big thankey to FinalZero, whoever that is.

I might just mirror the worldkit and climate pages on my Wordpress site given the former Bricka's permission and a decent way to import html to wordpress with images.

FinalZero is Terra, I believe.
I did have a bizarrely similar (to the original poster's) accident about four years ago, in which I slipped over a cookie and somehow twisted my ankle so far that it broke
What kind of cookie?

I second linguofreak's question about stickying this thread? It's an immensely useful topic.

Also, if it's alright to ask here, are there any good resources for calculating stable populations for animals/other mobile fauna? I've been using this, this, this and this in conjunction, and made up the difference with my own calculations, but it would be nice not to have to wing it.

When making the flora and fauna of your conworld, the first place to go is Wikipedia, to work out how the evolution of your plants and animals had progressed through time. Here's a random example: mammal evolution and taxonomy. Especially check out that chart at the top of the second link. Notice how there are dozens of rodent species for every species that you might actually want to touch? Don't neglect the varmints! Next, pick a region on Earth that's similar to your conworld and check it out using this utility. It shows you all the species in an area that you select. How many gazelles live in northern Chad? How many rats is appropriate for a small patch of rainforest? Find out! To get a more global view of biodiversity, check these maps out. Here's one for plants, and here's one for animals (edit:oops). And here is some more info on making these maps. If you want to show some real love and care to your creatures, you might even create a guide like this one about bumblebees. I usually use google image search to find pictures of animals close to the ones I want, and then photoshop them if I need animals that are a little different. Lovingly designed plants and animals with obvious attention paid to the science behind them and between them is, for me, one of the most important parts of a good conworld.

Enough with the calls to sticky this thread. C&C threads aren't pruned anymore so this will be here indefinitely, and you are free to include a link in your sigs, so there's no need to have it cluttering up the top of the forum.

Do not let it be fed to the LinkRotBeast!
Its magical powers will not hold us away if we keep this bumped! Epic thread is epic!
